Does anyone remember reading in one of Tom Clancy's books (I believe it was The Hunt for Red October) where the main character, Jack Ryan, was being flown somewhere in a hurry so he was put in an "F-106". Now that would have made sense if it were a "B" model and you wanted to get somewhere in a hurry, but it seems to me that Clancy then says something about the stewardess bringing him a drink. I read whatever book it was long ago and remember being amused by the seemingly weak research the author (known for his military knowledge and research) did in this case.
I wonder if anyone out there can shed any light on this. I can't find the specific reference and now am beginning to believe I misread the book or dreamed this up. It's he.. to get old.

Ummm, I never did read the book, but I'll have to pull out the DVD today and watch the movie again. I don't remember anything about a six in the movie although I do remember the part about Ryan being "flown out". I'll have to check anyway.

Hmmm... you might be merging books. While it's been a long while since I read HFRO, I do know that in Clear and Present Danger, Ryan had to hurry down to Panama and was flown in the backseat of an F-15 (from Eglin I think). He was trying to get down there before someone who had left DC on a Gulfstream and the pilot laughed and told him he was going to throttle back, that they were already ahead of the G-IV. Or something like that.
