What year did the tailhook mod start making it's way onto the six? What was the tailhook mod? The first one we got in '59 was so equipped....Warning system that the tailhook was down? ?? A Lt Smith of the 27th FIS made an Unintentional approach end barrier engagement, not unlike a carrier landing

What year did the tailhook mod start making it's way onto the six? As the Jim states, some acft were so equipped in late 59 early 60. The combined fleet received the arresting hook beginning in May 63. There seems to be some controversy as to its design intent; either for approach end engagement, or for far end engagement following aborted take-off or brake failure during landing. Historically, a far end barrier engagement was attempted in a 106 on 13 Sep 67, when 59-0068 (438th @ Kincheloe) was required to land with the throttle hung at 94% (main fuel valve closure failed to shut down engine). Touch down was beyond 6000' mark with subsequent barrier engagement in excess of 200kias. Too Hot...Pilot raised the nose and pulled the handle at 100 to 200'; ejection successful; acft destroyed.

I was at the Kinch and watched it happen. We heard through the grapevine that a TCTO hadn't been complied with and that caused the throttle to jam. Not sure it's true, as I was in SAC and didn't have first hand info. BRG, Jon
