Back in early 1983 I was chosen to go to Nellis to interview for the position as the Branch Chief for a new Simulator. I went TDY and a Chief and Col picked me up at teh Air Port in Las Vegas. I was surprised when we started driving out of town. They "briefed" me into the program and we went to Moses Lake. I viewed the new facility being built and they told me the Sim was in design/manufacture by Singer-Link. After being told of teh duty day, catch a bus at 6 in morning, ride to moses Lake, work normal shift, ride bus back to Nellis, I declined their offer and asked to be "Debriefed" and read out of program. They weren't very happy because someone had hand picked me for job. I went back to McChord to my new C-130 Simulator and a few days later got a call from WPAFB, Flight Simulator Program Office. They heard I was still available and offered me a new job as an Enlisted Program manager in Acquisition. I became a 99501 AFSC. Well I moved to WPAFB and started my new job as Test Director for all cargo Simulators. We had C-130, C-5 ATS and a C-5/C-141 Air Refueling Simulator Program going on. My new Col found out I still carried a TS + Clearance so he read me into a new program in test at Singer Link. Since I had several C-130 Simulators (C-130E, C-130H and HC-130P) in Test I could manage test on a "Black" program as well. Yes, He made me in plant test manager for his F-117 Simulator. Strange how thing come back around.

Lorin, I think you meant Groom Lake, which is where Area 51 is.
That's called; "Old Timers Desease".
I know, I have it.

What ? I am lucky I still remember to get up in morning. But I never have a problem with going to sleep. It's just sometimes I don't make it to the bed. Back when I worked with MAC/AMC I remember everything was either Strategic or Tactical. A Strategic nap you pulled the covers down, a tactical nap could occur anywhere.

we called it Moses Hole, where even the mosquitoes had to have clearance from the tower to land- they were big and plentiful the one time I was there.......

Except for the skeeters, it looks like a great environment and a great location. Bet it has a million memories.

Those of us that hail from there call it Moses Hole too. Or Moses Gulch, or, "The lake too thick to swim in, and too thin to plow!" (Years ago it had a VERY bad algae problem, since fixed. It's pretty nice now, but the crappie fishing isn't near as good as it was when I was a kid!) Oh yea, the skeeters are still there, and just as bad! The only place worse was Ft. Lewis, WA when I was stationed there. Hey Gary? How are they in your neck of the Washington woods?

all thru the '70's mcchord used moses lk. for a group of things... from L.A.P.E.S. to C.D.S.... a drop zone aptly called Larson d.z. was about 14 miles west of town... and many things happened right around the base... also JAL pilots used the 15000 ft runway to practice... i spent many an afternoon in the bar at what is now called grant county airport watching those oddly colored 747's shoot landings... and most aerial port personal assignned to "drops" brought fishing gear... it was a choice t.d.y.... contract quarters (motels on the strip) and i think $25.00 a day per diem for military and $35.00 for civs. eating and drinking on the economy...
