This is the camera I've been researching. Its a few steps up from mu sx120. shop.usa.canon.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_10051_10051_320208_-1#BVRRWidgetIDI read all 3 pages of reviews. Couple of them are low scores and some bad comments. Most like the camera. Funny haow some are 180 off from eachother. I've always gotten great service from Canon Inc. and I like the company. Jim, I didn't go into COSTCO Saturday because the parking lot was overflowing. I hate big crowds. I might it COSTCO in Silverdale tomarrow. I like a smaller camera with a nice zoom feature that I can carry in my coat pocked while out hunting. All comment welcomed on this camera. Gary, Best time to hit Costco is on a weekday in the morning right after they open - less crowded. Here's a CNET review on the SX160IS reviews.cnet.com/digital-cameras/canon-powershot-sx160-is/4505-6501_7-35419319.htmlIt's a battery eater so stock up. Would be better if it had a faster recover time after a low light shot. Megapixels you need are 12 to 16. Digital zoom is 4 so that means optical zoom is 12 to equal 16 total. Digital zoom takes over after you max out optical zoom and it uses less of the sensor so that means getting into digital zoom has more tendency to pixelate images when enlarged. On zoom, always look for how much is optical versus digital. 12x optical is pretty good if you have a good quality lens which cheaper model cameras don't often have. Read it before you buy. Pat P.

Looks pretty good, Gary.
It has lots of nice features.
One of the most important things is your familiarity with Canon cameras, much shorter learning time.
I like cameras with AA batteries, but De's has a flat battery, that has to be charged in the camera.
If your previous Canon used the AA batteries, you probably already have a charger and spare set of recharging batteries.
If not, they are a good investment, as the extra set can keep you snappping whtn the set in the camera gets low.
If you do have a set, and they have not been used for some time, throw them away and get a new set, as they lose the ability to recharge.
The AA batteries usually don't have as long a use time as the NiCad or other solid state batteries.

Well the wife and I went to town today. I looked at cameras and she looked at what interested her. I was on a mission, as where women just wonder around and look at this and that. It was about 1100 hours and the parking lot was just about full. Most of the shoppers were young to middle aged. I was wondering to myself, "Why isn't anybody working these days?" I scoped out over half a dozen camera's. Didn't like them, didn't like feel of a few, didn't like where some were made, didn't like the battery strength or life, etc, etc. I then went up to the Bangor Military Exchange Store on the Navy Base. Settled on the Canon SX160SI www.staples.com/Canon-Powershot-SX160-IS-Digital-Camera-Black/product_960311 Before the shopping trip I checked with Canon USA on the repair of my camera and was told they just swap it out for the next better model for $140 or I coud use the Canon Loyalty Program where I give them my camera and they give me an upgraded model fopr $130. The military exchange had the SX160SI on sale for $169 plus an additional 5% off. I also got a 16GB SDHC Card. I played around with it and the military exchange said I could return in anytime within 90 days if not satisfied.

Sounds like you got a great deal. Can't wait to see some pictures posted or videos with that new device. Thanks, Pat P.

Wife wanted to go for a drive in the country today. So I figured this is a good time to test the new camera.

Gary, Nice nature pictures. That zoom really gets out there! Were the lighting conditions overcast and hazy? The colors look true for overcast conditions. They would probably really pop with direct sunlight. Looks like a nice camera you picked out. I bought the wife a Canon Elph 520 $70 off for $129 at Costco. Also a 2595LMT Garmin with 5 inch screen for $199. I was really tempted to get that Canon T3i that's been reduced $100 and has a two lens kit (18-55mm and 55-250mm) on sale thru Apr 6. But at $880-$100 I think I'll wait and see if smaller SLR with zoom comes along. I'm getting tired of carrying around a bag with lenses in it. www.costco.com/Canon-Rebel-T3i-DSLR-Camera-2-Lens-Bundle.product.11760020.html Pat P.

Yes Pat,was over cast. Had a few on and off light rain showers and fog at times. As for cameras my list was for small enough to fit in my hunting coat as I shoot more with a camera that I do my archery equipment. My second need was for a pretty good zoom feature.
This photo is of the Dungeness Spit Lighthouse. My State map says its just under 3 miles across the bay from the beach we were on. There was some light fog also. For overcast and light fog I was very pleased how it turned out. The big deal when using a zoom is keeping perfectly still to prevent blurr.

The cameras you mention I don't remember looking at. I think I passed up on the T cameras as they were to big.
Can't wait for the next airshow whenever that might be.

Pat, I see it there in the Shoutout box at the bottom. Thanks MOW. I think I screwed up the first time. As I was typing, I hit ENTER to type another line and it popped into the Shout Out line up and started me on a new post. I thought it had posted so I just stopped and figured it was done. When I saw it had disappeared the next day, I did a test and clicked post when done, then typed one for genej50 and clicked post and they both worked.
I need to step up my OJT program. Pat P.

Been enjoying my Nikon Coolplex with its 30X zoom. It also fits in my shirt pocket. Takes great pictures when set to a finer setting. Photos that were set with only KB memory were not as good as the ones set with MB memory. It makes a difference, but harder to post in here. Sure much better pictures than the ones I took back between 1978-82 in Germany. Wish I had this camera back then when I was flying around West Germany in OV-10's.

Nikon Coolplex with its 30X zoom is doing me very well. Only had one time when the battery went dead, but I had taken some long videos. Its not a problem because my wife always has her new camera also.
Only issue is with the picture quality setting low where the memory is in KB's the photo's and a bit grainy. For clear shots have to up the quality setting and then all the shots are MB 1.50 -1.75MB size. They will not post in here.

Hi Gary, I use MS Paint (comes with Windows) to quickly resize a pic I want to put on the forum.
I click on the picture file with right mouse button and select open with MS Paint. I then do a Save As and add -2 onto the file name. That lets me keep the original pic size and shrink a copy of it to a smaller size for emailing or Forum uploading. Then I select resize and select 30% and it shrinks my 1.3 meg picture to about 300K which works well with the Forum picture upload feature. When I open any of my picture folders I can quickly see a -2 on a file name and know that it is already smaller in size. Whole process takes less than a minute.
