Anyone have any experience with the electric motor driven A-model canopy actuator system? I would like to fix mine, it broke yesterday. Obviously I do not, but I am curious about it. What exactly broke? The motor, the actuator, the ... ? Not getting power? Mechanical problem, or electrical problem? Any details to refresh the memory of some of these old hands?! Any pics?

Mark
When I was closing it yesterday, I heard a clunk sound and the canopy did a freefall the last 8" of travel. The up/down switch on the outside works fwd & rev of the motor; as it normaly does. Fortunately the canopy lock system is disabled to prevent people getting locked inside. I'm aware that the system has a gearbox system powered by a small electric motor. It may also incorporate a brake; I am just not sure. I have never dealt with the system (I'm a weapons guy) and we don't have any TO's for the Six.

Jim,
I worked on the Aircraft side (Electric shop) for many years but we never did repair on the motor itself. We would just troubleshoot to the actuator. Egress shop changed out the actuators. There was a fella here that worked Egress, but I don't think they repaired these motors either. I can't remember if it is jackscrew or hydraulic like a tilt and trim actuator on a bass boat?

The malfunction you describe sounds exactly like the malfunctions that could happen on the jet that made installation of the red canopy brace a requirement. I remember hearing all kinds of dire warnings of what could happen if the actuator failed and the brace was not installed.
Never having worked on a canopy actuator, it sounds to me like it is a gearing problem. I know this doesn't help any, but I thought I'd pass it along anyway.

Well we managed to get the canopy actuator out and partially disassembled. It appears the system is a "recirculating ball linear actuator". We found a broken shear pin in the shaft drive and the balls had come out of their"path".This weekend we attempt repairs.
Thanks Jeff for your help. :salute

Got the canopy actuator reinstalled today. What a challenge. I would imagine that it would have been a bit easier if some of us were 20 years old . The 3 of us ranged between 64-72 and we struggled in 90 degree weather for a number of hours. She was afightin' us Cap'n; but, we persevered and won the day. :clap here's to my crew. And thanks for the help from the virtual crew! (forum members)

To those who have done so much with so little for so long you are now qualified to do everything with nothing forever. :rofl Way to go - that is one tough job even for a 20 year old!
