One little thing I have noticed that is missing on finished models of Sixes I've seen is the lack of the Angle of Attack vane (plus ground cover) on finished models. Maybe I am picky, but it was there. AJ AJ, Check out this review of a recently finished Revell 1/48 F-106. In the top photo you can see the AOA vane that the modeler painted grey to match the aircraft. www.modelingmadness.com/reviews/viet/us/lee106.htmIt is molded into the nose of this kit but I doubt the modeler even realized what it was. He seems smart enough reading the review so maybe he just didn't want to mess with it. I've never seen anyone model a cover for the AOA but that would be pretty cool. It would have to be handmade or scratch-built but I suppose it's possible. This modeler made a few common mistakes - like painting the inside of the intakes and the tail hook silver - but he didn't do to bad on the kit. (I'm not 100% on this one but I've never seen an F-106 in those 48th FIS, 'white-tail' markings with the blown, one-piece canopy.) For anyone wanting to build one this is a good starting place and will give you lots of hints and tips. Mark

These ole eyes can barely make it out. But at least he made the effort. I agree on the intakes, not silver (aluminum) at all. Let me get really picky – what about the pitot heads in the intakes for the variramp system?) One other thing I notice on most competed kits is the modeler tries to put detail in as best they can, but fail on the little things. An example is the interior of the wheel wells. Nobody seems to pay attention to the numerous lines and small pieces of equipment there (hydraulic pressure xmit, etc.). These were also flat black in most cases and not green.
If I was still capable I would love to try a Six model. One difference is I would show it with the radome off and mounted on the stand exposing the gear. Plus I would have the side MA1 doors open. I’d also have the 05 door hung open. Doing that interior would be a real pain! Showing a Six in a maintenance posture would be fantastic for a diorama. I once built a P-61 with panels open and in midst engine change (engine jack and all). Maybe just me, but I love to show the real deal as best as possible including all “Remove Before Flight” flags.

These were also flat black in most cases and not green. AJ. I agree. The thing is most of that "plumbing" is molded in the Revell kit as it's a typical highly detailed old Monogram kit! (Revell bought Monogram years ago.) Most guys just paint over it all. Now, the pitot heads in the intakes? WOW! That would be some detail as well as builing the MA-1 bays! I've seen it done on other plane kits but most of that is scratch built and takes good eyes, steady hands and a lot of time! Sure would be cool though! Mark

Mark I love detail. I used to even wire and line the engines with micro wire and coated thread. Here's another thought. What about showing a Six mid engine change. Now that would be really cool.

When you start building the Revell model put the fuselage and wing together first. Don't put all the ginger bread in the weapons bay until after. The reason being you are going to have to hold the fuslage to the wing with vise grips or something to the *dang* thing to hold. The fit is terrible and I am about to toss it in the garbage.
