I gave up on my last Revell F-106 so I bought a new one in Seattle several weeks ago. I started to paint and put it together. I noticed that this one 's decals look different. I don't remember there being any decals for the fuses on the Falcon fins. May be I am losing it. I think thats what you call them. I hate to say this but I bought a Revell F-101 model at the new Wal-Mart before I went to Seattle.

I forgot to mention when I began the first Revell '6 model, I used some books I have on the '6. They are:"F-106 Delta Dart in detail and scale.", "Colors and Markings of the F-106 Delta Dart", "F-106 Delta Dart in Action","Convair F-106" and "Century Series in Color." The one I used the most was "F-106 Delta Dart in detail and scale."

I really had to do a lot of trimming for the nose wheel and the landing gear doors for the main gear for the model I am working on now.

I must be losing it. I put the nose wheel landing gear in backwards. Thank God for the 106 books I have as the Chinese instructions are not the best.

Dare I ask whose markings you are going to put on?

The instructions are in English but I think they were trans lated from Chinese. I don't know what marking to put on the model yet.

There always was a problem with teh rear of the fuselage seam behind the wing. There's going to be some flash on the kit, that model came out in the early 80's and could use a little tuning.
I've got seven darts in 1/48th to build, most of them in different 5th markings.

I probably would need 10 models to do a good job on the 10th.

OK guys I'm new to the model building (except for a few cars way way back when )
I was looking at the possibility of buying a F-106 model, so I thought I would ask the experts here a couple of questions.
1. Which brand of model is the best? I.E. most detail, realism, ease of building etc.
2. Are there any 49th FIS decals out there? I would like to build one with my old SQ markings
Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

For decals, try www.twobobs.net/they have quite an assortment. My SIL developed one for the F16's out of Colorado. Thats also where I got the 87th FIS decals if I remember right.

Jeff, The only models of the F-106 are the Hasegawa in 1/72 and the Revell in 1/48. The Revell is the most accurate and more decals are available for it now than at almost any time. It's a tough kit for a beginner but if you are patient it builds up very nicely. These are the only 49th FIS decals I know of that are available right now... www.squadron.com/ItemDetails.asp?item=MS481011The Revell model is relatively cheap - Try Wal-Mart - they usually have it. (I even saw a couple at Michaels (the crafts store) the other day!) You might want to check out www.aircraftresourcecenter.com or www.hyperscale.com or www.modelingmadness.com for some hints. Go to the magazine rack at most big stores and pick up a copy of Fine Scale Modeller for some hints too! HTH, Mark EDIT - Here's a review.. www.modelingmadness.com/reviews/mod/krause106.htm

Jeff you can't be any worse than me. I used to build plastic models for years, then I took about a 10 year break. Not good as my patience has worn thin to say the least.

I am going to build my '6 as Capt. B. B. Patterson's of the 456th FIS. They are one of the squadron decals in the kit.

I will have to use the newer canopy as I didn't do a very good job painting the old style canopy. Not as steady as I used to be. May mail order some decals for the old bird.

One little thing I have noticed that is missing on finished models of Sixes I've seen is the lack of the Angle of Attack vane (plus ground cover) on finished models. Maybe I am picky, but it was there.

One tip for gluing the clear plastic canopy on. Use Elmer's School Glue. It dries clear. Don't get any on the clear plastic where you don't want it. It may graze the plastic. Using Super glue will screw up the clear plastic. I figure its fumes from the glue. I use super glue where there isn't any clear parts. Works great.
