I have a couple of questions. 1.Is it a requirement for all aircraft maint afsc to go to A&P tech school ?
2.Is it a requirement for all specialists to go to A&E tech school before attending specialist tech school?
3. Is there still 3,5,7,& 9 level afsc?
All this in todays Airforce? :confused

The current AFSC for Tactical Aircraft Maintenance is 2A3X3. The X being the skill level, and those have not changed. A 2A3X3 is now what a 431X1 was.
When I was on KC-135s it was just called Aerospace Maintenance Specialist, and I was a 2A5X1, eventually being a flying crew chief on tankers my last AFSC prior to going to FE was C2A571.

My entire career I was a 431X1.
When I was on recips there was a letter on the end, but can't remember what it was, and will have to dig in my records to find out.
When I went to the Saber Dog, the suffix was an H.
It changed to a C in 1955 0r 1956.
When I was on the F-105D at Nellis in 1961, I had a prefix on my AFSC, a Z, along with the C suffix.
In the years I was in Maintenance Control it was required you have the AFSC of the job you were controlling. If you were and AGE controller, you had an AGE AFSC.
In larger control rooms there were several AFSCs working.
The Senior Controllers were always 431X1, no matter the suffix.
When I was in single squadron control rooms everyone had a 431X1.
I don't know when they came up with a separate AFSC for controllers.

Over my 36-yr career, I think I had five different 7-levels. I never held and still don't hold an A&P, nor do I want one. I've fixed enough airplanes in my lifetime. If I were still an active pilot and airplane owner, maybe I'd want one to save some $$ on maintenance, but that's about the only reason I'd want one.
Shhh--don't tell anybody, but I did some work on several civilian airplanes (illegal as hell) over the years, but none since the statute of limitations ran out!

I think the C suffix meant 1 or 2 engines :scratch_head :salute

Y'all crack me up. Being a fuel guy you dudes didn't actually repair airplanes, but you were always in our squadron and received our benefits for repairing age equipment, not working on aircraft.

As MA-1 Techie I was a 322X1A, I left in 1971 as a 7-level. In Flight Sim I was a 342X1, then a 341X1. I got my 9-level in Flight Simulation and my secondary 322X1A became a 9 level as well. When I got assignment to WPAFB I was awarded a 99501, Enlisted Program Manager and my AFSC Secondary was changed to 34100. As a Chief they gave us a 00 level...no not Zero level...lol. I retired 99501. The Flight Simulation AFSC went away as entire Career Field went to Contractor maintenance.
