"Brat" is a term affectionately given to all children of military personnel: Army Brat, Air Force Brat etc.
Unless you have been on a military base, any service, for several days you probably don't know that every morning the colors are raised/hoisted in a ceremony and at the end of the day they are lowered/retired in a ceremony. "To The Colors" bugle call is normally played accompanying the ceremony and the rising and lowering of the colors. Everything stops across the base including traffic, drivers dismount (get out of the vehicle). All turn and face the call and render respect as appropriate to the ceremony and colors. Watch the first site below to see those ceremonies and hear the bugle call, then watch the second clip taken on an unnamed base. There is hope for the future. RA
I use to take great delight in admonishing the student pilots when I would catch them ducking back into the BX or commisary at Williams AFB during retreat. Wing CO put the word out that he wanted the names of those "dodgers". Once every 2 months they would form up by the main gate and march to the flag pole for retreat ceremony- he didn't care what rank they were, and there were more officers than enlisted.. Sort of tells you something......
