Hi there
I am currently refurbishing an RC, turbine powered F-106similar to Rich Fong's model.
I intend to paint it in 5th FIS scheme, and in particular the aircraft 0-70237 (1971-1974) This aircraft "belonged" to the 5th FIS's Commanding Officer throughout that period, and was 'lost' on May 8th 1974.
The problem I have is, that this aircraft carried three stripes behind the cockpit canopy, and running around the fuselage at an angle, and passing behind the air intake splitter plates.
On the various publications that I have checked, the colors of these stripes vary considerably, due to inks, and printing processes, and they are vital to the finished model. The stripes are colored RED, YELLOW, GREEN, in one photograph, and in others they appear RED, YELLOW, BLUE.
Can anybody out there confirm the colors please, so that I can restore this model to the show circuit, and possibly to some of the jet meets in the USA.
I hope to hear from you in due course.
Thanks for your help in this.
Best regards
Ian

I don't know if this is any help, but...
Hanging in my cube is a nicely framed pic of F106 90005 in 5th FIS colors, and it is sporting squadron commander's stripes.
The color scheme is as follows:
Thin blue Thick Yellow Thin blue Thick Yellow Thin Blue.

Hi Bill
Thanks for that info. I have seen photos of that example, but I'm afraid that it is completely different from the colors on 70237.
I suspect the colors that I have on my magazine photos, are the best I'm going to get, and the tendency is go with the Signal Blue theory. And then when I look at another photo, in another magazine, I am again swayed in the Green direction.
On the other hand, you have now given me an eye witness account of yet another scheme.
Who knows I may just have to do the model in 90005's color scheme, and give the credit for authentication to you.
Your help is much appreciated.
Best regards
Ian

Hi Jim Pictures? Pictures? Do you want pictures? Or do you have pictures? My photos are from a couple of magazines, one of which is on page 32 of "Colors and Markings" Vol 1, by Bob Kinzey, and the other is on the centerfold of "World Aircraft Information Files" Issue 43. Both show the aircraft really well, but the printing processes are so wildly different, that the color band I need confirmation of is distinctly green on one, and blue on the other. It's just that the scheme is quite distinctive, and it would do the model justice, to have the splash of color on the overall gray. Help, I'm tearing out what's left of my hair. Ian
