This is the only photo I took of #0776. You can tell its on Kodak 110 film. Taken with a small pocket camera. Not that good of a picture as I did not take into account the reflection off the aircraft. My cheep camera did not have a filter either. Gene had all the fancy photo taking gear and has taken awesome photos. Thanks Gene! I recall the Squadron put in a request to change the "0" to a "1" for the year, but USAF HQ said no. Attachments:

I recall the Squadron put in a request to change the "0" to a "1" for the year, but USAF HQ said no. Oh, I can understand that completely. You can't change the tail number, but you can emphasize certain numbers like Florida did. Look at this photo. www.convairf-106deltadart.com/58076003Large.htmlWings do the same thing all the time. You find one aircraft with a tail number that matches the wing number, and just make it larger. Play with the font a bit without changing the actual number. Mark

I almost forgot about my model of the Freedom Bird. I bought this for around $90 as I recall back in 2000/2001 when I was going to crew chief school in Texas. I was a bit disappointed in it, but have been dragging it around for the past 10 years. For the past several years this one has been sitting in my boy's room. Yea, they left the tail number off, didn't paint the wing tanks, and there are a few other odds and ends I could criticize, but what the heck. We all know what it is! Maybe someday I'll re-paint it. These days models like these go for around $125-150 or so. Mark

when i first saw the freedom bird at the 318th i thought it was really colorful, with the painted tanks and stripe...but after i saw a few other paint jobs i started to think it was rather drab... back in '76 everybody on base was doing something...painting murals on hangar floors, painting sides of buildings red, white and blue...after36 years i think "776" is a very classy jet...

from bullhunter: Gene had all the fancy photo taking gear and has taken awesome photos. Thanks Gene! this is what happens in the course of a full circle around the mountain...the angle changes, now the sun is behind you... and the large glare stares back into the camera... not even a polarizer can correct it... and this is what you get...

Regardless of the glare, that is a very cool photo! You know, I always thought, if someone creates decals of a plane, it has to be cool no matter what. There are plenty decals for The Freedom Bird, and folks build them. Maybe I'll build mine eventually with these decals! Here's a guy who built one, but his wing tank decals were bad, so he couldn't use them. I also noticed he painted the pylons red which was a mistake. Other than that, it's a nice model. s362974870.onlinehome.us/forums/air/index.php?showtopic=221666Mark
