We are going to replicate the arresting hook for 0086 on display at PCAM. We have the shoe and are going to use mild steel (since it is not necessary to be functional). Attached is a photo of the mount. Was there some kind of fairing around the mount? If anyone has a detailed photo or drawing of the mount it would be helpful. Thank You all. Attachments:

Ahhh! Dang it. Last time I was down at Kelly I got this photo of the business end of the hook, but none of the connection point! Maybe it will help some, and I'll keep looking. Mark

This might help a bit. I zoomed in on another shot I took of 57-2533 at Kelly. This is a B-model, but looks the same as far as I can tell. I actually dug out one of my Monogram 1/48 scale plastic kits to look at that just now as well, but it's not quite like this photo. I'll take a photo in the morning to show you. I'll keep looking for some real photos too. Mark

There was no fairing per se for the attach point as you can see in Marks last photo, in fact you can see the head of that monstorous bolt. I believe that bolt is about an inch thick!!!!!!!!! The Old Sarge

Glad to help with those photos! Well, I figured out why I was confused looking at that model last night. It was an F-102! Yea, somehow F-102 parts got into an F-106 box! I have a bunch of unfinished kits, and sometimes have pulled three or four out at the same time to look. Now I have to find the F-102 box that probably has F-106 parts in it! Anyway, I grabbed a real F-106 kit. This is the Monogram (Revell) kit. It actually looks pretty darn good when you compare it to the real thing! In fact, the detail on these kits are really fantastic. Check these out. That sure looks like the bolt Jim mentioned on the left side of the arresting hook in photo 2. (The pins on top are just for attaching it to the rest of the model. Compare to the holes in photo 1.) Anyway, the search continues... Mark

Here's a new video on You Tube. Original test footage of 451 testing the arresting hook. I broadened my search to include the term "tailhook", and found this.
It's silent, in black and white, and 11:17 of slow motion. All it shows is the hook engaging the barrier. It is video I've never seen, however, so that's cool. Honestly though, it's pretty boring.

Nice photos Gene! Did you get one of the forward connection? I just found this one from the "Sawyer Six" someone else took and posted on a modeling site. It's not to bad actually! (If you click on the photo to open it in a separate window, then enlarge it to around 200%, it actually provides some good detail.) Mark

you should the the resolution from my microwave oven... just kidding...im surprised to... Stop it! You're the only guy I know here who has the title "Photographer" in his signature/avatar! I have complete confidence that it's the photographer, not the equipment! I ought to know, as I've spent enough money on cameras in my lifetime!! (Of course, even a blind squirrel finds a nut now and then! I mean me - not you!!) Excellent shots! Mark

Gene, The "quick release pin" you refered to is actually a pin to hold the tail hook in place and prevent dropping it on teh ground. If you look at Erv's 106 site on aircraft and look at 59003 there is a good picture from the rear of the plane that shows the remove before flight streamer. Also of possible interest is the connection, the dark piece between the hook and the airframe is actually a piece of hard rubber material. Marv2

Good point Marv2! I was thinking about how to make that part in 1/48 scale, as it is not part of the kit!
Hmmm?
