I remember the national anthem being played mostly when the stations signed off when I was a kid. Usually the video was something like that; may have even seen a version of that one even.
It's funny to me. We thought we were pretty tough being able to stay up late enough for all the stations to go off the air! I even remember when HBO would go off the air for the night when it first came out! For me and my brothers that was a big deal since we didn't get a TV in the house until I was eight years old, and it was a privilege we had to earn; not a babysitter.
These days I've been known to holler at my kids for sneaking out to watch TV in the middle of the night. Never an option when we were kids! Shoot, some kids have TVs in their bedrooms these days. To be honest, my son does, but it's just hooked up to a DVD player.

I believe the old Indian Chief with the glycerine tear was Iron Eyes Cody. He was almost as famous ad Clara Peller (where's the beef), but more famous than Yancy Derringer's sidekick,Pahoo Ka Ta Wah, played by X Brands.
