This morning we visited the South Dakota Air and Space Museum www.sdairandspacemuseum.com/. It is located just outside the main gate of Ellsworth AFB, SD. The museum is located in the old Ellsworth Alert Hanger, which was used by the 54th FIS. The Alert "Barn" was moved from near the end of the runway to the present site in 1989. It was a massive undertaking. It was moved like a house is moved. Slowly and carefully. Many exhibits are in the four aircraft bays, and the offices and store are in the crew area. Unfortunately they do not have the two Interceptors the 54th had at Ellsworth, the F-86D and F-89J. The center focus is a B-1. Around the perimeter are B-29, KC-135, B52 (tall tail) and C-54 on the West. On the East are F-100, F-101B, B-105B, F-86F, B-25, A/B-26, and others. In the #1 bay is a beautiful, blue and yellow BT-13. I was pleasantly surprised to see T-33 590 from the 5th FIS. It even has a Spitten Kitten decal on the fuselage, above the port wing. In the gift shop I bought a small F-106 pin to put on my 5th FIS cap. If you are ever in the Rapid City area, or traveling along Interstate 90, try to make time to visit this very nice museum.
