I know this can be a real can 'o worms, but one of my pet peeves is finding aircraft at museums that have their tail numbers repainted with someone's favorite tail number.
Is it just me that finds this a bit dishonorable? I can tolerate painting a bird in a unit's colors respective to it's locale or in honorarium; but I have a problem with changing the tail number.

One of the reasons for painting a different tail number is for the bird to carry the registry and the colors of a bird that had been assigned to a particular base/unit............. 2 examples are Castle AFB and KI Sawyer, they had to take whatever bird was available................Also, the vast majority of those that restore these birds worked on that particular tail number, or it was the CO's bird... A bit of nostalgia, if you will...And the records of the bird generally reflect that it is displayed as tail number such and such... In most cases, no one would know from just looking... Most are placarded showing the original number and sometimes will reflect all units that may have possessed it.....I look at it as a bird that survived and it makes no difference whether it has one or 2 serial numbers....... Thanks Jim, sometimes it's just good to hear a different point of view. Your points are valid : I must learn to be grateful that a mere 2 doz+ of our girls are still available to see and appreciate. :salute

The one at McMinnville, last I saw, wasn't even wearing regulation USAF lettering. This was like '04-ish...
