My 3rd multi-thousand mile road trip in the last five weeks was to Bowling Green, KY. This was my 5th Hot Rod Reunion where we took a dragster owned by my friend Ray Godman of Memphis, TN. Ray is 83 years old and I raced with him and driver, Preston Davis in 69-71. In Sep 1951, Ray was hit by a Korean sniper's bullet. This Marine never let a wheel chair keep him from drag racing and running successful businesses. KY weather is usually a factor this time of year. The past two years it was 107 and 103 degrees and this year it was a cooler 90 degrees but the rains got us. There were over 1200 custom hot rods and several hundred race cars. We got our annual fix of loud exhaust noise and Nitromethane fumes at the Cacklefest which normally takes place at 9 PM in the evening. This year the rain made us Cackle at 4 PM with 35 other fuel cars lined up on the drag strip. I keep a pint of Nitro on my workbench and every time I start thinking how nice it would be to go racing again... I take a whiff and it reminds me how hot, loud and smelly my summer weekends used to be. Then I grab a beer and go inside and watch drag racing on TV. :rofl There are also pictures from the prior years events in my WebShots Albums from Reunions at Bowling Green and Bakersfield, CA.
