Want a chance to thank some active duty AIRMEN? ?, Stop by the local recruiting office, there is generally at least 2 there... Whenever we are traveling accross this great country and stop in a shopping mall, I look for an armed forces recruiting station.....Because I always wear my AF veteran hat with the old SMSgt pin on it, I generally get called "Sarge".... As I walk thru the door I ask "Sgt, can you guys handle a reenlistment today?" After they quit laughing at a fat, grayhaired old fart, they begin asking questions about your service time, where you have been stationed and what you did...... Bask in glory for a few minutes, then inquire about their careers, ask questions about their ribbons and awards, because most of them with about 8 years service will be wearing 4-8 more than we who spent well over 20 are wearing..... They really looked sharp in their light blue shirts and dark blue trousers..... Yesterday I stopped in the office here in Traverse City, Mi and met a young SSgt and an even younger newly graduated Airman!!!!!! He was on TDY to the recuiting station while awaiting his reporting date to Kadena AB... Pretty neat, he didn't have enough leave time accumulated, so they attached him to the station for 30 days.......... The SSgt was wearing the new version of the old Air Police shield (highly polished) and said he wished that they were still called Air Police!!!!!!!! As I was leaving the office, the SSgt called me back and handed me an AF tee shirt!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I stepped into the Army, Navy and Marine office (they shared) and told them that they missed out on getting a reenlistment!!! They all got up and come over to shake my hand!!!!!!!!!!!! Told them, It is I who owe you guys a big debt of gratitude for filling the gap left by those who followed me left when they were done serving.... The oldest person there was the Army Captain with 12 years service.............. Try it the next time you are near a station, they will make you feel good and you can do the same for them...... The Old Sarge

Once in a great while I pop into the USAF Office in Silverdale, WA when my wife goes in the fabric store near by. Maybe twice a year I do this. Faces change there fairly often as the recruiters go. One visit the recruiter was talking two two individuals when I entered. I listend abit and then asked if I could say a few works. The look of the recruiter was "Oh $hit" I guess he was worried what I might say or debat his comment. I said, "I can't say what the USAF is like mow as I retired back in 1995. I can tell you that I'd do those 24 years again and have never been sorry. That my retirement check and my VA check has never been late. Medical coverage cost my family $460 a year and most families pay mor than that a month. Dental coverage is about 35 bucks a month. Then there is the lifetime of other benifits as flights on military aircraft, commassary, military exchanges, and the frends you keep for life scattered around the country and globe." I was given a copy of the new "Airmans" magazine and wish everyone well and left. You just never know what will happen when you walk in there.
