Chief's Retirement Marks End of Era: When CMSgt. James Clemenson retires on Saturday, it will mark the end of an era for the Air Force. Clemenson is the last enlisted airman on active duty status who was stationed in Vietnam to retire from service, according to North Dakota Air National Guard officials. He's been a member of the North Dakota Air Guard's 119th Wing in Fargo for nearly the past 40 years, but during the last four of them, he's been on active duty status with the National Guard Bureau in Washington, D.C., they said. Clemenson enlisted in the Army in January 1970 and did two tours during the Vietnam War from October 1970 through April 1972. After receiving an honorable discharge, he joined the Air Guard the following year. Only one other active duty airman, CMSgt. Jim Honeycutt, still remains in service who wears a Vietnam Service Ribbon, although it's for temporary duty in country versus a mobilization, said the officials. (Fargo release)

Jim, That bit of info really surprised me because that other guy you mentioned (CMSGT Jim Honeycutt is my brother-in-law. I had to show this to my wife and she was surprised too. Jim is married to my sister Dixie.

I have in the past tried to get him involved and he has checked out this site even told him to check into the situation with the KI Sawyer Museum problem a few months ago. He hasn't had much time but maybe this recognition will spark his enthusiism.

It is sad to see men and women who love the military have to retire. I will admit, I am extremely bitter the Air Force forced me to retire High Year of Tenure at 28 years. Hind sight being 20/20, I wish I had joined the Army, at least I would still be serving. The saddest day of my life was being forced to retire and then being refused by the guard and reserve. ;D
