My wife served as a U.S. Army Nurse for 6 years on Active Duty. After that she worked as a registered nurse until the VA rated her disiblity for leg, knee, and ankle. While an Army Nurse she worked many extended shifts and even double shifts when other nurses were sick. With her rated disiblity she retrained in Human Resourses as she couldn't work on her feet for very long because of pain.
In eight days she will have her left ankle replaced. Recovery time will be 6 to 8 weeks. Prayers are very welcome. :thanks

Gary, I will be praying for your favourite nurse, that the ankle replacement goes well, and a good recovery. I will be praying for you as well. With a new ankle, she will find it much easier to kick you where you sit. So get ready to be faster on your feet. Jim Too

It's amazing what doctors can do these days. Having had one knee replaced and an ankle and shoulder rebuilt, and going in for another knee replacement in two days, one of the most important things to have is a very positive attitude. She WILL be better than she was before. When the rehab is over she'll wonder what she was nervous about. My 85 year old aunt had both knees replaced and wondered why she waited so long. Sure she was afraid of the unknown, but everything was fine, and she continues to thank God that He led her to make the right decision.
God Bless your wife, and keep her in the palm of His hand. And thanks for her service.
Ron

We are back home. Wife has a new ankle and it will take 6 - 8 weeks for recovery. She then will be able to start walking on it. She has some damn good pain pills. She surely needs them. Me Thinks I'm going to be pretty busy around here with taking care of everything including her.

Gary, I hope your bride has a good recovery after her ankle replacement.
I don't know how they do those things, but isn't it wonderful that God has given people the ability and desire to come up with replacement parts for joints?
You be a good nurse and treat her with lots of love and care.
She deserves it.

real soon she wont even know there's metal in her without rubbibg the surgery and noticing the numb spots.
had my second knee done last thursday, home saturday, on cane today and will be out driving later today. unfortunately, i cant tolerate narcotics, so there's a lot of wincing.
dont push her rehab, there are psychological issues she'll be dealing with, so help but dont force please.
good luck, and God bless
:2thumbsup

Thanks again to all for your kind words. :thanks . Things seem to be working out well. Only problem is the wheelchair will not fit through one of our door ways so they are delivering a smaller one this afternoon. This will prevent her from hoping with a walker from the rec-room to the bathroom. It takes quite abit out of her as that cast is 7 or 8 pounds.
@postalron. Thanks for the advice. Glad to hear you knee is doing well. Quite a few people in our Church have had knees done and a few hips. Belinda is the second with an ankle replacement. You also take it easy and don't push yourself. As for driving, watch out for the other drivers as you sure don't need to bang that knee up.
Take care and God Bless to all.

gotcha and thanks. Fortunately all I have to carry is an ace bandage and a gauze pad. I do remember a heavy cast when I had my achilles rebuilt 35 years ago.
Dont forget, she might have made irrational requests before (HAHAHAHAHA), and they might get worse. She'll be in pain for a while, so just baby her until she can walk to the bathroom by herself. But when whe wants to shower, just take advantage of it, Tee Hee.

"But when whe wants to shower, just take advantage of it, Tee Hee." No showers for awhile. Doctors orders. Just spunge bath then later she can sit on an ice chest in the tub with her leg in a plastice bag hanging outside the tub. We also have a hand held shower head that will come in handy for this. This will be in effect for weeks. Everytime she needs restroom I wheelchair her in there from the rec-room. I've put an ice chest next to her recliner stocked with milk, juice, water, & soda. Got tired of running up stairs all the time. Our home has a daylight basement with the rec-room, laundry masterbed room and bath room, and office. Everythuing else is up stairs. Sometimes wish we had an elivator.

Good plan, having the stuff nearby will obviously be a lot easier. BTW, the elevator thing will becoming much more usable and useful the older you get. I'm moving into a single story when I leave NJ, it's hard enough for me to get to the second story now. Moved my bed and necessaries to the first floor, fortunately have a handicap friendly addition with raised commode,. shower with built in seat, etc.
again, be patient. I'm trying to not irritate my wife too much, I guess I'm getting better at it.

"I'm trying to not irritate my wife too much, I guess I'm getting better at it."
Oh ya! I understand that very well. She has said a few times already, "Please don't get irritated with me, I'm in pain."
Today at 5:00PM we have her first follow-up appointment with her surgeon. Its a long trip includes a ferry boat ride across Puget Sound.
At times I do wish we had a one story. Sure would make life abit easier. We don't want to move because we have seven acres and a nice valley view. Eagles, hawks, deer, elk, bear, and other critters are always in the fields behind our house. Plus I'm from a farm a a big dairy farm borders two sides of our property. I've though seriously about a chair lift on the stairs.

This is a front view of Belinda's left ankle. There is a plastic piece between the two sections of metal. The plastic piece lasts about 10 years or a bit longer. It is easy replaced with a small cut and the old piece is pulled out and a new one slipped it. Modern Medical equipment. :2thumbsup Still going to be 6 or 8 weeks with no weight allowed on the ankle and foot.

With all the rain we have had the yard is soaked. Used to drive around the house and load Belinda into the car. Now I have to use the garden tractor and wagon. I said to her today when I put her in the wagon, "Do you know what this is called?" She replied, "No I do not." I answer, "Its call hauling A$$." She did not think that was funny. :scratch_head

Wife is doing much better. Needs less & less pain medication and best of all now, she gets up and can walk on her new ankle. No more need for a wheelchair. But she is using a walker for balance and support. She has been walking using a shoe or sneeker around the house. Doctor wants her to use the ortho boot when leaving the house to protect the ankle. Her surgery site is also healing up well. Tomorrow will be her first physical theropy visit. Her doctor is very pleased with how it all is going. Thanks for all the prayers and well wishes.
