As you all know by now there was a Great Earthquake and devastating tsunami in Japan yesterday afternoon.
The quake was felt EVERYWHERE, but didn't cause as much damage in populated areas as one might think of such a large quake. In fact there are very very few deaths or injuries being reported from falling objects, and none of our military installations were impacted very much. Yes, broken glass, some minor facility damage here and there to older weaker buildings, but personnel are accounted for, families are safe, aircraft and ships were not damaged. Misawa AB still has no power thus they are a bit cold up there, but personnel and families are accounted for and safe. Recall procedures and personnel/manpower accountability processes worked well.
The tsunami also did not affect any of our military installations as you might think. Again, not much damage to the bases even at coastal bases like Yokosuka. The USS George Washington carrier at its Yokosuka pier did move.. a scary one that moved back and forth away from its pier, but no damage or injuries.
So if anyone here is worried about not hearing from loved ones or if you know others who are worried, let everyone know there is minimal power and phones in many areas, none at Misawa, but accountability of personnel has been confirmed so please know all is well with our military and their families.

I just FINALLY heard from my brother who lives on the island of Shiloku (south of the main island - basically south of the cities of Hiroshima and Kobe), and he is okay. Most of the damage is well north of him.
Whoo...
Just fixin' to chat with him on Skype.
Mark
Edit: Just talked to him. He didn't even feel anything. In fact, he heard of the quake/tsunami on his cell phone while driving from one of his students who asked him to to turn on his TV. He's fine.

CNN threw up (no pun intended) a banner yesterday that said all military was accounted for and safe, but didn't mention if that was just for Japan or the entire area.
I know that many are in a bad way right now in that part of the world.
