Nice story Bear, and I believe you did the correct thing.
Thanks for sharing.
One ORI comes to mind for me and always has. I was assigned to the 416th Bomb Wing, 416 FMS, (SAC) at Griffiss AFB 1974/75ish.
The 49th FIS (ADC) was also there but not part of this story.
I worked jet engine flightline dispatch. I knew most of the troops in the main engine shop down between the main hangers.
One of these inshop troops was over weight and constantly being harrassed about his weight and being threated with discharge. This went on about a year then the ORI team arrived one night.
I don't know what caused him to do it but toward the end days of the ORI the Jet Engine Shop was looking good and was expecting an outstanding rating.
I was sent to the main engine shop for something. Its been 36 years ago so I don't recall what for, but I clearly remember what I witnessed.
Between the main hangers there was a cement ditch and it was covered with solid steel grates. I noticed several ORI Inspectors standing around and that over weight
pulling grates and pointing in the ditch as the ORI Inspectors were looking at each other and also pointing in the ditch and writing on clipboards.
I also noticed the Shop Chief
and the assistant NCOIC
in speed walks heading for the area.
I was just a
at that time so I took care of my business and headed back to our dispatch office in the SAC Flightline area.
I reported to my NCOIC
what I had witnessed. His reply was, "Oh $hit, its going to hit the fan now!"
That evening I saw him :
in the chow hall and asked what was that all about with the ORI Inspectors.
He said that the shop bosses were picking on him about his weight constantly, almost daily. Now they will either leave me alone or discharge me.
I then asked what was under the steel grates. He said the shop was rat holing spare parts that were new and servicable, plus in short supply. Things like jet engine fuel controls, fuel pumps, and a few other parts that often went back order.
He was discharge several months later.
My observation.
