This from Walter Schmidtke... What we need is a F-100 with zero take off roll. Now if we can just get it to land on the launcher for turn around... More zany Cold War antics! It's just amazing...some of the wacky things people do in Nevada! www.patricksaviation.com/videos/cpasley/4823/ Pat P. :teacher

The Germans did some experimenting with rocket launch of airplanes.
Their problem was that it was too late in the war for them to get any benefit from them.
I wonder what was going through the mind of the first pilot to take off with that rocket hooked to the belly.
Had to be either very brave, or completely bonkers.
Yes, there were some interesting experiments in the Fifties.
There was the Pogo, and the Sea Dart, along with lots of other crazy contraptions, acting like aeroplanes.

I worked for a WO that was involved with a SAC program being developed at Edwards for zero launching of the F-100 as depicted in the short video........ They were also working on carrying an F-84 on the B-50 and the B-36 for fighter coverage....... He had several reels (16mm) of both tests and there were some failures of the zero launch...... The F-100 was to fend for it self and find a place to land if he survived the mission.. Notice that the only external stores were 2 250 gal drop tanks.. Indian Springs was never an Air Force Base per sey, at the time of the test, it was known as Indian Springs Air Force Auxiliary Field, (this is where the 4 Thunderbirds crashed practicing for an airshow) www.imdb.com/title/tt1035242/www.vectorsite.net/avzel.html The Old Sarge
