Griffiss Air Force Base Rome, New York circa: winter of 1974/75
Winter of 1974 I was newly married and we had a very small apartment on East Bloomfield Street in Rome, New York. It was close to the end of the street not far from the Erie Canal. Our apartment was on the 2nd floor which was the top floor. I was only a young Staff Sgt then so that was the best we could afford. A small one bedroom place. Our family had dairy farms in northeast Pennsylvania near the upper Delaware River. It was my favorite place to go so just about every weekend, holiday, or leave was spent on the farm in Pennsylvania. This particular weekend was a three day weekend for me as I got an extra day off for pulling alert weekend duty the weekend prior. As usual before leaving for the weekend we turned way-down the thermostat for the bedroom and closed the door. The thermostat for the living room and kitchen we only adjusted down a little. We spent the 3 days on the farm in Pennsylvania while a major snowstorm passed through the Northeastern States. Because of the heavy snow and storm it took longer to drive back to Rome NY. Upon arrival the apartment seemed much colder that usually on our previous return trips. But it was also the tail end of a major snowstorm and it was very cold and windy. I went to turn up the thermostat in the bedroom and when I opened up the door I got hit with an arctic type blast of air and wind. Then I noticed it. One of the bedroom windows was wide open. As I walked around the bed I encountered a snowdrift stretched across the bedroom extending about six feet from the window. :angry It was as high as the window shelf. What a mess. I'd never seen a snowdrift inside a home before. Anyway, I went down the stairs to my vehicle to get my small shovel. I went back up to the bedroom and started shoveling snow back out the window. God only knows what our neighbors might have though seeing snow flying out our 2nd story bedroom window. I was glad the floor was hardwood so the clean up was easy. Neither of us recall opening that window at all. Nothing in the apartment was toughed or stolen. We always made sure all windows were closed before we departed on any other trips.
And thats the way it was, winter of 1974 Griffiss AFB. :lol
Anyone else have interesting or funny stories of weather? Stories, not current weather as we already have a thread for that.
