I never heard of a B-52 flying under the Mackinaw Bridge but a RB-47E did on 24 April 1959. My wife Sandy, who at the time lived with her parents near Kincheloe, remembers the local papers carrying the story. I did a search on Yahoo by asking the question; Did an airplane ever fly under the Mackinaw Bridge?. A couple of hits came up and one is: www.north-lights.com/Bridge/pilot.html The pilot sounds like a real hero in my book....Cheers.......Erv Smalley

So I searched the Forum on Mackinac and found this thread from Nov 2010. Bobski and others have been swapping emails and researching this for several days (see write-ins below). The question at the reunion was, "Did a F-106 pilot ever fly under this bridge?" So if anybody out there can corroborate J Daniels comment below, please let us know. We would love to have the facts on this F-106 so we can give proper kudos to the pilot and aircraft. Pat P. Norm Wiederhaft found this short article about Capt John S. Lappo flying his RB-47 under the Mackinac at 425 MPH. See the link supplied by Erv Smalley [RIP] in the Quote above for a very detailed story about the career of Capt Lappo, a truly amazing pilot. absolutemichigan.com/michigan/michigan-history-soaring-beneath-the-bridge/Doug Barbier pilot wrote: That was one of them...... an F-86D and possibly a Deuce went under as well. Doug Ken Wigton wrote: I "Bing"ed flying under the Mackinac Bridge and found 3 planes that had done it. 1 was the B-47 and in 2007 2 private airplanes with pontoons did it together. Found no others. Ken J Daniel wrote: I thought there was another pilot that did this also. He was with us at Selfridge as a Staff Sargent after he did it. His name was Jim Steck. Let me know if I am wrong. J Daniel wrote: The one I was referring to was a 106 and the pilot was rifted from a Captain to a Staff Sgt. Someone on the bridge got his tail number and turned him in. Let the stories begin...
