On this day, in 1876, Lt. Col. (Brevet Major General in the Civil War) George Armstrong Custer made the biggest, and last mistake, of his meteoric military career.
Seems he decided to march his troops, members of the Seventh Cavalry, to a spot on the Crow Agency, in the rolling hills along the Little Big Horn River, in South Central Montana.
Custer, along with the others with him, were wiped out by those they came to attack.
Custer's Last Stand continues to be a prime example of a martinet, who was self-absorbed and didn't listen to those who new more about the situation than he did.
Well, at least, it has been the fodder for a number of interesting books, and some movies.
Even though it is not the most historically accurate of the movies, "They Died With Their Boots On", staring Errol Flynn, as Custer, is the best one to watch.
