visited the base museum friday...met an old dart pilot, eagle driver, retired airline pilot all rolled into one..we had a long visit...i explained to him that i used to be the base photog. and that i had taken many photos that would fit into the museums atmosphere... i was a little put back by the fact that there was not one photo of mine on display...oh well
he also told me the dart would be in the paint booth a while longer... as was the eagle...

Never fear - the Dart is almost here !
Plans are to roll 459 out of paint on to the flight line for the upcoming Air Show at McChord next weekend (17-18 July). That’s the good news - now the bad.
Let me start off by saying that we (the McChord Air Museum) have been very fortunate to have great support from the Wing (62d AW) for our paint projects. The Wing finds money for the paint, provides personnel and the facility to complete the paint projects - - which is a big relief for the Museum Foundation. Because of this I try not to look a gift horse in the mouth - but . . . . .
Even though I have drawn up complete, historically accurate plans for the painters to follow when they paint our aircraft, there have been more than a few errors in the paint schemes paint itself - some I can live with, some are a little harder to stomach. Unfortunately, the project for our Six just might be the worse of the aircraft we have had painted ! For many reasons we were behind the 8 ball throughout 459's and our F-15's paint project (the F-15 came out pretty good) - so I kind of expected the worse - - and got it !
I could go on for days about the issues - I'll add more detail as I post pictures of 459's new paint over the next few weeks.
Ernie

I know exactly how you feel. My last few years I was the Administrator/Director of the McChord Air Museum. It was a fun position. We got the F-15 and needed it treated and painted. We had support from the paint shop but they would just paint. The museum people had to mark out the tail flashing. I was not able to find anyone to do the 318th Starburst so I did it. I made an error in the layout of the starburst and often was informed that it didn't look right. The mistake was mine and we lived with it. Can't wait to see the F-106 & F-15 on my next shopping trip to McChord. I'll be there for the Air Show on the 18th.

Ernie and I know eachother. Few months ago I visited with him at the Museum's gift shop and purchased a few cards. We have visited by internet a few times. I always try and stopm at the museum when on base. Friday July 2nd I was disapointed to notice the museum closed. No vehicles around.
