59-0156, 1 Mar 1964, was the aircraft Col Bastian ejected from. Engine flamed out at low altitude and the front seater ejected Col Bastian, but didn't make it himself. The front seated was Capt Kenneth C. Hite.

when I first got to Hamilton as an Amn..according to my 2 little braincells ram...I remember shortly before I got there a plane mechanic was climbing into a cockpit while the plane was being worked..he removed the seat safety pin for a second( don't remember why the idiot would do that) and somehow fired the seat up thru the roof of the hanger....I remember the Sgt saying too me that it blew the kid almost to the runway...well...what was left of him as he made a big hole in the roof of the hanger.. I don't know how true it was but somehow it stayed in my 2 little braincells...

As you are former pilots, you are probably aware of the Caterpillar Club, but there is at least one book they have published and it is full of astonishing bail-outs.

The Caterpillar Club, the Silkworm Buddies, the the survivors club, Ejection Seat Club etc were all nicknames for jet aircraft ejector survivors. Just like the Royal/Grand Order of Tape Dragons for barrier engagements. I actually belong to the latter. Was riding on FCF out of Tyndall and we lost engine during supersonic run. We did approach end engagemen. It was nice to see all the flashing red lights, but the decelleration was a shock. The burner would set you back in seat, but the barrier makes you appreciate the restraints in harness.

Actually, I would say most of the members, most as being more than 50%... a lot more I think, are enlisted and not pilots, although of the pilots we do have here we have nothing less than legendary ones Oh and while I'm thinking about it... since you have a history with/at Duluth would an 11th or 87th FIS avatar suit you? I think it's time you upgrade from the default let me know and I'll slap one on there if you don't know where to find them.

But of course a Red Bulls avatar would be nice! You can do this yourself! Click on your username, and when the new page opens up click on "Edit Profile." Right up in the top center you will see some options. Click on, "Use a Forum Avatar - Pick one" (just click on "Pick one") and that will open up the avatars! Click on the one you want, and save the changes. Pretty simple!

I don't believe I've ever watched this video. Seen plenty of the still photos, so this is interesting. Turn the sound up,and pay attention to the first part during the C-130 test.

The Six Rocket Seat worked fine in testing.
So, then, why were so many pilots killed ejecting, either the chutes didn't work, the seat hung up in the reclined position, or just never left the bird?
I do believe every pilot gave a sigh of relief, when the modified Martin-Baker seats were installed.
A plus for Phase and Egress troops was the much easier removal and installation, and general maintenance.
The Rocket Seat may have been a good idea, but one that didn't work all that well.
Col. Brougton spent lots of time convincing the higher ups, including JFK, that the Six needed a seat that wouldn't kill the pilots.
He spent a lot of time in the hanger, looking at the seats, talking to anyone who worked on them and bringing any VIP he could corner to give them a primer on the seat.

Can't believe I haven't read this one before. It's a description by the pilot, then-Capt Richard J. Montgomery, 94th FIS, of the ejection/crash of 57-0233 on 12 April 63. It's in a "fill-in-the-blanks" format, but the description at the bottom of the page is where the "meat" of the incident is. A "B-seat" survivor. Interesting comments about the back of his head getting singed from the rockets like Col. Bastian did. (The story is up in this same thread.) There is a photo of Capt Montgomery here too of him sitting on the canopy edge of a Six in his 94th FIS flight jacket. www.ejection-history.org.uk/Aircraft_by_Type/F-106/1963_04_12_usaf_f_106_montgomery.htm

I believe the plane was 067. I drove a dump truck up to the Saranac Lake area to pick up the engine. A C-54 Skycrane brought the engine to the truck, and I was headed back to Griffiss. It was smashed pretty good.
