:confused :scratch_head
I have seen the "Deuce" every time I go on base at Minot, and wonder why it is there.
To the best of my knowledge, the only times there were 102s at Minot was during exercises, or they were just stopping for fuel.
For several years, I was on the transient crew during exercises. The only planes I ever turned around were 101s and 89s. Never turned a 102.
The display "Deuce" is a National Guard bird.
I don't remember when it was put on display, but has been there for a while.
If someone knows why it is at Minot, let us know.
There is a Six on disply, but it has been near the old 5th FIS area, not by the main gate.

Jim Too Jim, I took the pictures but have no idea what year it was. '81-'83 is best I can come up with. They had trouble towing it to the gate. The power lines were lower than the tail. If memory serves, they did it early Sunday morning and had a boom truck to raise the power lines to tow the plane under them.

McChord Museum has a very nice F-101 VooDoo on display with Canada Air Force markings. Our F-106's oftened landed at Comox Air Base on Vancouver Island, in British Columbia, Canada. Their F-101's often traveled through McChord and the 318th FIS flightline. Plus the F-101's in Canada were part of NORAD. Now they fly F-18's. I would venture to say that is the reason Minot has the F-102 on display. Maybe assigned at Minot for a period, or went through Minot as transit birds often and part of NORAD.
Photo is of two Canadaian F-101's parked on the north side of the 318th ramp. circa: 1975/76

I think the reason they have a Duece at Minot is because they can. I'm not 100% on this, but I think when base historians get a chance to get any aircraft for display purposes, they will take it. Just look at all the aircraft we have at Dyess. It's one of the best collections in Texas, and not even a fifth of those aircraft on display were ever stationed there. Probably less than that. As far as the Duece at Minot, I know the 5th FIS used to fly them, but I don't like the idea that they painted it to look like the F-106 markings. Someone should have done their research and painted it with 52nd Fighter Group markings. That's one of those projects I'll take on when I get hired as the Minot Historian!! (In other words, probably never!) I don't mind it when bases re-paint aircraft to match the colors worn by units that were stationed there once, but what irks me is when they make up markings that did not even exist when that particular aircraft was in service. PLEASE, tell your local base historians to get it right!! The tail number doesn't have to match, but the paint scheme should. Here's a photo of the Duece I took back in 2005 when I was stationed at Grand Forks, and just passing through Minot. Mark

I think you guys are right, the deuce was never stationed at Minot.
I also agree with Mark, they should have left the colors the 5th had when they did fly the 102.
Wasn't trying to stir anything up. I found the pictures and thought you may have been interested. Hope you enjoyed them and brought some good memories back for some! :salute

This deuce was stationed at Duluth with the guard. Have no idea how it came to be at Minot. You wouldn't think SAC would want a reminder of their defenders around, but they may not have wanted a buff "on a stick" either. We used to combat turn F-101s at McChord on the ramp just down the hill from the 318th area.

:e9new The Minot Deuce was assigned to 179th FIS at Duluth. It was one of our "Shooters" when we won the F-102 catagory in the 1970 William Tell. Team Captain was Maj Al Amatuzio founder of AMZOIL. 61505 sat on the base for a while after our conversion to the F-101. We made some non standard loads to the delight of the Group Commander, an old '51 pilot. Some mounts were fabricated and a 50 cal was put on a forward launcher rail and a 500lb GP bomb shape was hung on the left pylon which was missing a drop tank.

Good looking display though not historically accurate. Good to see a complete example of the plane =)
