Back in the days when I was at Richards Gebaur, a few of us guys would get a few days off and we would take a free ride to Chicago and stay at one of the guy's,Ralph Elsey, house. His dad would pick us up at Ohare, and take us to Peatone. The cargo planes that were at our base were C-124 Globemasters "Old Shakey". These aircraft brakes were squealing as they were approaching the runway and when they were running up the huge engines they would twist back and forth but what can ya say, it was free and that meant a lot back then when you didn't make much money. We would have a lot of fun when we were once there.

Those were the days. Today you'd probably have to declare it on your tax return.

My wife and I got a hop to Hickem AFB, HI from Mcchord AFB, WA in 1986. It was 9 1/2 hour flight. There were only two pallets and 1/2 dozen pax so we were able to lay down and sleep. Several years later the family took a hope to Elmendorf AFB, AK on a KC-10 Tanker. After our vacation we hoped back on a C-141. My wife retires in about two years. We both will be free then of any schedules. We plan first a retirement vacation and she picked BoraBora. The next year we plan to hop around the world. Has anyone done that? Would love to here about your experiences with that.

It was fun to read your post. I took the same flights from R-G to see my girlfriend (now wife) in Elmhurst IL, getting off at Madison WI or O'Hare. They flew from R-G to Des Moines, Mpls, Madison, O'Hare, picking up reservists on Friday for the weekend and returning them on Sunday. Found the best place to ride was lying down in one of the bunk-beds in the back. It was a noisy, shaky ride for sure. Also remember one take-off from R-G took 3 tries to get it off the ground...the 2 aborts ending in braking hard, turning around, and trying again. Also got a hop on the T-39 Saberliner with a Canadian General going to the northwest that agreed to drop me off at Hill AFB where I got a C-130 hop to Travis. Also got a hop on a Convair T-29 taking NCOs out to NCO College or something at Hamilton AFB, out one day back the next. Went to get my 10-speed racing bike. When the pilots heard I was actually going to San Jose, they said they'd pick me up at Moffet NAS the next morning. The Navy guys were aghast when I came into their base ops with my bike and was picked up a few minutes later by a beautifully polished USAF T-29. Thanks for the memories!
