On 23 February 1945, U.S. Marines captured Mount Suribachi, the highest point on Iwo Jima.
That day there were two United States flags raised on Mt. Suribachi. The second one was photographed by Joe Rosenthal. That is the picture we are all so familiar with, and is the model for the Marine Corps Memorial in the Federal City.
If you have not read "Flags of our Fathers", about the men who raised the flag on Mount Suribachi, find a copy and enjoy the stories of those Patriots.
