On 15 February 1898, the second-class battleship USS Maine exploded in the harbor of Havana, Cuba. Around 260 of the Maine's compliment was killed in the explosion and sinking.
It has never been determined what, or who, caused the explosion. The popular thinking of the time was that it was caused by Spain.
So, the United States went to war with Spain.
The fighting stopped in August 1898 and the peace treaty came later.
As a result of the U.S. victory, we annexed Puerto Rico, Guam and the Philippines.
The greater result was the increased modernization of the U.S. Navy under President Theodore Roosevelt. A real champion of naval strength.
Interestingly, our Navy is now at it's smallest number of ships since before the War with Spain.
