During WW2 there were a number of airplanes that made emergency landings on the Greenland Ice Cap. The URL below is for Glacier Girl a P38 that was found 268 feet below the surface and recovered a few years ago. That is great. I seen the histry channel special awhile back about its recocery from greenland. Great to see it fly.
I received a e-mail from a friend today about a WWII tank that was found recently in a Russian Lake in great condition. They pulled it out with heavy bulldozer.

Yep, on the tank they cleaned out the intake system and fresh diesel fuel and fired it up........... They lost the 17 because the APU broke loose from its mounts and set it on fire as it was taxiing..............

Sorry guys you got your aircraft mixed up. It were a B-29 that the apu mounts broke loose and set fire to the aircraft . :teacher

At least they were both by Boeing............ Very interesting sites on salvedging B17s found on Google
