We had a Tech Rep killed in Alaska in an F-102 missile bay. It was a very cold day. The crewchief tried to close the doors, but nothing happened. He called the Tech Rep who was nearby. The Tech Rep surmised that an air valve in the missile compartment was frozen. The Tech Rep stepped into the missile bay and struck the valve with the back of a screwdriver. The doors closed instantly, cutting him in half.
Those doors were dangerous!

All,
I never knew this, from Bruce Gordon. I only thought this was an Urban Legend. Thanks Bruce.

No different for the F-106 doors. That is why you never got up in there without the door locks in place. I have no knowledge of the Deuce, but I would think it would have had door locks as well. If so...this guy killed himself.

RULE ONE, NEVER ENTER THE MISSLE BAY WITHOUT SIX DOOR LOCKS AND TWO LAUNCHER LOCKS. I learned that in July of 1962 from a tech rep.
RULE TWO NEVER FORGET RULE NUMBER ONE!

Sorry for his loss. Rep's were great guys who trained us on the F-106's. God bless them!

We had a weapons troop that was troubleshooting an air leak in the missile bay and they had bled all the air off and missed the step that said to initiate the electrical valves to the open position before reapplying air. This was on a B model and when the air built up the doors started to close on him by the coffin rack. it caught him on the top of the head and sliced him open from the top of the skull down to his chin. Peeled the skin and ear off and fortunately the crew chief was there to stop the bleeding or he would have bled to death. He was never the same mentally after that.

I hadn't heard that about the 102, but we had long extensions that could be used to close the 106 bay doors (instead of the switch in the wheel well.) They came around and collected them all and said that an airman had committed suicide by standing in the bay and closing the doors on himself. That was in the '62 - 62 time frame, I believe. (I started on the line in '61 and got out in '64. As I remember, I was in longer after they did away with the remotes than I was before.)

PS> I never did hear where this was supposed to have happened. It may have been the "gossip" after the 102 incident if that happened in the same time period. It would have been AF logic to take the remotes after an accident.
