Got this reply from the the Town Administrator of Swampscott, MA and thought you should all see it. Seems we didn't get the whole story from Fox News. Jim Scanlon :god_bless_usa
Dear Mr. Scanlon,
The Selectmen's decision at their meeting this past Tuesday not to accept the USA Monument Award from Fireplace Mantels of Millbury, Massachusetts, should in no way be construed as a political statement as to this country’s involvement in the conflicts in Iraq or Afghanistan. In fact, what has not been reported is that the Selectmen repeatedly stated their support (in a publicly televised meeting) for a monument to be made and placed in the Monument Avenue area to commemorate the brave men and women who have, or will, serve in these military theaters. It is particularly important that any memorial chosen is consistent with the style and character of the memorials currently in place in Swampscott honoring the veterans from prior conflicts. In the process of honoring the current generation of veterans, we must be respectful of the sacrifices made by prior generations. With that in mind, the Selectmen also voted on Tuesday to establish a committee whose charge will be to design a monument to appropriately honor the service and sacrifice of the Swampscott men and women that have, or will, serve in these conflicts.
I believe that you would respect and understand a community’s desire to want to have input on the proper way to recognize the ultimate sacrifice of its citizens. Regardless of what is printed or reported, that is simply what has happened here in Swampscott. The Board decided, after input from many residents (military and non), that THIS donated monument was not what they wanted. I hope that you will be able to attend the dedication of the Town supported monument when it is placed on Monument Avenue.
Regards,
Andrew W. Maylor
