Just finished American Military Aircraft by Jim Winchester and starting Flight of The Old Dog by Dale Brown. Nice to curl up on the couch and get into a good book on these cold snowy days.

While on vacation to the Left Coast, I finished a wonderful book: "Daring Young Men: The Heroism and Triumph of The Berlin Airlift, June 1948 - May 1949", by Richard Reeves.
This moviong and exciting book, tells the story of the great challenge our new U.S. Air Force faced less than a year after it became a separate branch of our military.
It deals not only with those "Daring Young Men", but with the politics involved and the people of Berlin and their struggle to survive after their defeat in 1945.
I remember the Airlift and the headlines it made in the San Francisco newspapers that I sold and delivered.
It was continual first page news.
One amazing part of the story, deals with the "War Weary" airplanes that were used to break the Russian blockade of Berlin. C-47s, C-54s, a C-74 or two, British bombers and amphibians changed in to cargo planes.
They were flown by mostly recalled pilots and crews, as well as maintained by recalled mechanics.
The book tells of the relatively few lives lost to crashes, during a brutal European Winter, and the triumph of the West over the East.
If you enjoy Air Force History, you will want to read this book.

I just finished reading a fascinating book about one of my “heroes”.
It tells the story of a man who gave up riches and fame to fight for freedom.
I think you, too, would enjoy this book.
Maybe he is also a hero to you.
If not, he may well become one, after you read the book.
In March of 1941, at the age of 33, he enlisted in the Army as a Private.
He even pulled KP.
He was one of the most famous and highly paid men in America.
He already had a private pilots license and owned an airplane.
Later in 1941 he was sent to pilot training and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in January 1942, as a rated Army Air Corps pilot.
He flew B-17s as an instructor.
Transferred to a B-24 squadron in August 1943.
His squadron was transferred to Tibenham, UK in November 1943.
Overall, he flew 20 combat missions as a pilot, often lead pilot, on prime targets.
He was given more responsibility as the War progressed, along with rank.
When WW-2 ended, he was a Colonel and Wing Commander.
He went back to his civilian occupation, again as one of the most popular, and well-paid men of his era.
He remained in the Army Air Force/Air Force Reserve, retiring as a Brigadier General on 1 June 1968, at the age of 60.
His combat decorations were many.
He passed away in 1997 at the age of 89.
Queen Elizabeth II, in 1990 said: he was “The quiet American Hero”.
When asked why he went in to the Army at 33 years of age, his simple reply was: “Uh! I just did what everybody else did.”
We need many more men like him.
The name of the book is:
“Jimmy Stewart Bomber Pilot”, by Starr Smith; 2005 Zenith Press.
I found my copy at Half Price Books, but it may be available from other sources. Amazon and Barnes & Noble both have it listed as in stock.

I'm going to have to find that one Jim Too. I am totally burned out reading about Hyundai's today!! I've been taking a crash course on the cars and sales practices for the past two days. It's no different than any of the computer based training (CBT) courses I took in the AF. Just a different subject. Hyundai gave all the sales consultants until today to complete the 2012 training. I have a freebie since I'm a new hire, but I did the best I could. I finished all the product CBTs today (23 Dec), but still to finish the "best practices" courses. That's what I'll be doing Saturday! Right now, I am burned out however... I will be done by Monday! Just the same, y'all come see me, or send your friends to ME up in Abilene to buy a Hyundai!! We really have some GREAT cars!! Used too! Shoot, see me if you need a new Dodge. I can sell those. We're one big dealership family! (If I could afford it I'd buy a loaded Santa Fe SUV with the tow package! The Tucson's are pretty cool too!) Mark

:santahat OK guys and gals! I'm reading a book and NO it does not have "COLOR IN " pictures with it! I guess I'm reading something a bit different for an MA-1 troop. I have been reading "The Roadside History of Nebraska" for my pleasure. I have know many things about my home state but this book is really giving me an insite into many other facts and places in my state that I did not know about. You all might check and see if there are other "Roadside History of ----" your state! So far I'm getting in a little reading each day - much to my surprise - its better than reading a tech manual!
Merry Christmas to one and all!

I finished on vacation in October/November a book called, "None Dare Call It Conspiracy" was great reading and an eye opener.
Few weeks ago I received this from a frind: I have spoken on these very subjects for years -- Russia would have collapsed under Stalin had it not been for Herbert Hoover and FDR.... all of the Communist (antichrist countries) cannot even feed themselves, let alone go to war. Wars are expensive and poor nations cannot go to war unless they are armed an financed by the "moneychangers" that control the Federal Reserve Corporation and that is why the "US Dollar" is the world's reserve currency. One of my favorite book for 4 decades is The Nameless War by Capt. Ramsey, a member of the House of Commons in Britian during WWII -- you want the "real" "truth" about Dunkirk --- read the book!!!! If you don't know "true" history -- you cannot have Liberety!, because you are living and teaching lies to you children and their children's children.
So I guess my next book is going to be "The Nameless War by Capt. Ramsey". I'll look for it after the holidays.

Marv:
Where can I get a copy of "The Roadside History of Nebraska"? We may be going to Iowa with friends next August (don't ask why) and I thought we'd take a plane to Grand Island and drive to Ord for a couple of days. It might be interesting to know a little more about NE before we go.

Well the one I have - I got at the Scotts Bluff Monument outside of Scotts Bluff, Nebraska. I would suggest checking into the local library to see if they can find a copy for you. Also might want to look into the publisher , Mountain Press Pub. Co. The ISBN # is 978-0-87842-347-7. The book I have is a slick paperback, third printing, April, 2009. The inside cover has the following phone numbers - 406-728-1900 and the 1-800-234-5308. Might also go to www.mountain-press.com and see if you can get it through them. I paid $20 for mine. If you do not get a copy - contact me. I'll be in the area as well. Maybe we can get together! MArv

My brother sent me "The Pan Am Journey" by Thomas Kewin. He was a career Flight Engineer for Pan Am for 40 years. Flew as an FE on everything from the the B-314A to the 747. In fact, he was part of the crew of the very last Pan Am B-314 flight from Hawaii to San Francisco!
The don't make 'em like this guy anymore!
I made it about half way through yesterday after church, and if the kids chill out tonight I might sit down and finish it!

I just finished reading through From Rainbow to Gusto: Stealth and the Design of the Lockheed Blackbird. www.amazon.com/Rainbow-Gusto-Stealth-Lockheed-Blackbird/dp/160086712XVery well written technical discussion of the efforts to reduce the RCS of the U-2 and A-12. The only major drawback is that there isn't a discussion of the complementary ECM systems like PIN PEG and MAD MOTH.
