We went to Fantasy of flight together and had the grand tour of all the aircraft on display there,as well as watching a ww2 german STLO aircraft demo go thru its take off and landing as well as slow flight. Man that thing looked like was only doing about 10MPH at one time.Had lunch together and talked over old times. Wish it could last for ever BUT, all good things has to come to an end. Jay. P.S. pictures to follow as soon as I can email them to Pop Perry and get him to post them for me. :

They must have been having trouble with their server last night. The Old Sarge sent me another picture today. I added these to one of his Award albums so click on the picture and advance to the right. Pat P. :us_flag

Yesterday, the 16th of July, 2009 I celebrated (unknowingily) with Jim Scanlon and long time friend MArv Donnelly an anniversary of my enlistment 57 years and 1 day into the Air Force!!!!!!!!! We spent several hours relating TRUE and slightly Tall Tales - til Sandy said her butt was getting sore....(We had driven about 400 plus miles from Port Allen, La.) This makes 14 SIXERS that I have had the privelege of meeting since Sandy and I have started travelling around the country..... It is amazing, in a way how so many of us can have similar careers, even tho we have been in totally different places..............
Wish that everyone would up date their bio and reflect their location so that when we plan a trip, that I would be able to touch base with you. I am sure that as we traveled east on I40,I44, US 130 to Michigan and I65, I69,I24 and I75 to Lakeland, Fla. and the I10 back to Az that I had to be within 50 - 75 miles of some of you...............
Thanks to the MArv Donnelly B&B in San Antonio for your hospitality once again.................... Hope To see you at the 456th FIS reunion next June in Colorado Springs.......... The Old Sarge
Thanks Jim for meeting up with us, perhaps if you head west, you could find your way to Payson, Az.................... Jim

: Seamus, the pleasure was all mine. It was great to be able to meet you, Sandy and MArv, last evening. One of the things I have found with this forum is that it is personal. We share things we may be reluctant to share with others who do not have the backgrounds we do. We share some commonality that many do not understand. We love our country, we love our Air Force, along with the other branches of our military and we love the Six. Those three make us unique. That uniqueness brings us closer together and makes us friends, even when we have never met. Last night I met two gentlemen and a charming lady who are old and dear friends who I met for the first time. Thank you MArv, Jim and Sandy for sharing your evening with me. I look forward to the time we can meet again. Jim :god_bless_usa

Sorry I had to go to Oklahoma and missed you coming through San Antonio. I'm sure we will meet up in the future as many of us travel around the nation looking up old friends.
My 10 days in Oklahoma were fun and had some surprises.
I was alone the first 4 days of the trip as my wife was running around with her sisters, catching up with friends and family as they hit the Indian Casinos to lose their vacation money.
I went to the Cherokee Nation Headquarters in Talequah to stock up on Cherokee Tribe T-shirts and reference books. As I didn't have my navigator with me to misdirect our path I felt I could go down to the Nation and back without a map as I had been there 2 times before over the past decade. I swear, I don't think I'm part of the Cherokee Tribe, more like the Fa-Ga-We tribe ..........
I should know better, lets just say I saw more of Oklahoma then anyone really needs to. I was coming back home and headed north to Vinita, not going the way I came to the Nation. I'm running parrallel to Lake Spavinaw and I take a route that would take me west closer to my destination.
Just as I was to leave the small town of Salina, Oklahoma, I saw a static display of an all white T-38 on a pedestal , making a right turn, pull out manuever. The 2 small roads on each side of the display were dirt roads and the plane had no special reason for it being there.
You see the most surprising things when you take the roads least traveled.
Have you ever been surprised by a "thing" out of place, out of its element. If so, what and where was it?

:thumbsup Glad you didn't get lost on the way back to U City, Dan. I have seen airplanes setting in some strange places. Just south of the Grand Canyon is a small airport that has a Super Connie and an F8 just sitting there. The one that was the most startling to me was back in 1951. I was driving up U.S. 99 East in to Portland, Oregon. As I drove through Milwaukie, Oregon, a suburb of Portland, there was a B17 sitting along side the road at a service station/cafe. The plane sat over the gas pumps. Still there. www.thebomber.com/Jim :god_bless_usa

Here is another surprise for anyone traveling through southwest Kansas. At the Liberal, KS airport is an aviation museum with a F-4, F-14, and F-105 outside as well as some WWII aircraft inside. I stumbled upon this one by accident. You can see the fighters on Google Earth. And, yes, I have seen the T-38 at Salinas, OK many times.

Jim said,
In the early 1990's I was the Admistrator then the Director of the McChord Air Museum in WA State. We were interested in that B-17 aircraft and wanted to aquire it but I could not get any support from the USAF Museum at Wright Pat AFB. I also located a B-25 at an amusement park in I believe it was kansas. The owner wanted to trade it for an F-4 Phantom minus the engines. Again no support from the USAF Museum. These historical war birds need to be in air museums and preserved for our children and grandchildren. The B-17 in Oregon looks like its well cared for. I have to go check it out.

:confused I zoomed in as close as I could get on Google Earth and saw the same thing you did, an obvious blank space where the nose should be, and no corresponding shadow. So, I sent an inquiry to the Bomber Restaurant and asked if they have the nose off for repairs, or ??. It has always been very well taken care of. I will post the reply. Jim :god_bless_usa

:us_flag I got a reply from the Bomber and they basically gave the information that Mark passed to us. The man who wrote me thought it was cool that I was looking at the Bomber using Google Earth. Great tool. Quite a project to honor those who fought in WW 2. Next time you are in the Portland, Oregon area, take a drive on Old 99 East to Milwaukie and stop at the Bomber to look through their museum. I would like to stop if I am ever up that way. Take a look at the web site Mark sent. It has some great pics of the nose of Lacey Lady. The e-mail I got is below. Jim :god_bless_usa Jim, That’s cool that your looking at The bomber from a webcam. Yes, we removed the nose of the Bomber to restore it. It is now shinning and brand new in The Wings of Freedom Showcase on The Bomber property. www.b17WingsOfFreedom.org (under construction) I’ve attached a couple of things for you to read. Hopefully they enlighten you. If you have further questions, please email Jayson@thebomber.com He is in charge of the restoration project.

New Braunfuls, TX July 13, 2009 - Local police received a sighting report of 3 suspicious individuals in a local eatery called Sea Island. Turns out it was our forum pals Jim Scanlon, Marv Donnelly and Jim "The Old Sarge" Gier. Gier, who had just about completed a 6000 mile road trip around the US, said he had a great time and couldn't wait to get home and plan another trip. Jim's email to Pat: Hey Pat here are 3 sixers who just got done eating dead fish.....................Jim Pat: Where exactly is this "Dangerous Liaison" taking place? Jim: SEA ISLAND eatery near New Braunfels- ain't sure MArv drove and we hung on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That's why I love these guys... you couldn't buy this kind of entertainment! Speaking of the Old Sarge... here are two more pieces of his handiwork I almost forgot to show you... Here are 2 more finished clocks............They have the aluminum SIX and they are 24 hour clocks. They started out to be both oak, but I screwed up when I went to route the hangar hole on the back ruining one. So there will be one oak and one natural cherry. Pat's note: The Old Sarge doesn't make screw ups... maybe "unplanned improvements" but not screw ups! That way, each piece he makes is a one-of-a-kind treasure to it's recipient. Pat P :beer
