lindel said: I bet it does. You had a great line-shack there. Brown wood? Did you spend lots of time in there?

Nope, I lived closer to your work area. We swapped golf balls with the fire dept, next to SAC Hill.
The only time we got to go to the flightline and hanger area, it was for a simulated nuclear attack. That way, we'd be better located to glow in the dark...

Great pictures. The alert hangers at Griffiss were torn down within the last 3 years. The only thing about Rome that hasn't changed is Floyd ave and the Normandy res. A few of us that were there in the 50s get together every 3 or 4 years.

I lived on Bloomfield street, south end. The brick appartments are still there acording to goggle earth maps. I'm going to be in the area about October. Anyway,,,,,,,, One day some 49th FIS guys were selling these buttons and baked goods for the William Tell 76 TDY. They were surprized when a SAC dude stopped and bought some baked goods and one of these buttons. I passed on a few 49th patches and this button to one of our forum members that was in the 49th. Forgot who it was. Does not matter.

I lived at Wright Park Manor for about a year, the winter of 82 we didn't need to chill salad plates, or put mugs in the freezer to become frosty. We just left them in the cabinets, the insulation of the wall was ....well non existent, when the winds and the snow would kick up everything in the cabinets would frost over there were 3 of us renting a 3 bedroom apartment. One Saturday we heard the fire trucks coming past the apartment, so we went to see what was going on, an apartment was on fire and was burning up in a hurry!, we watched in amazement on how fast it went up, so when the lease was up me moved, to Ringdald Ct and stayed there until we all PCS'd. Never did find out what caused the fire, do have to say this the fire wall between the apartments worked great. the apartments on either side of it just had a little smoke damage, but no fire damage.

I was at Griffiss when the commassary caught fire and was a total loss. That was about 1975 I don't remember hearing any cause mentioned on how or why it started. It was all wood and went up quick in the evening. I got a few pictures of the fire but don't know where the are now.

:salute I just found out the Barns had been torn down on my latest check of the area on one of the map programs a month ago. I almost cried because I took my son to them in july 06 when my mom passed away. The alert building door was open so I took him in and showed him where I lived for a few years in the 80s. Boy what a shock to just see the the outlines of the barns and nothing there. I have to find my picture of a six on alert, but I climb up the point of the front door so it kind of top down looking.
