Among the many vets I've met, including several aviation notables, they seem to have the same sentiments as the gentleman cited in that article.
I remember a discussion I once had with Doolittle Raider and relative neighbor Ed Saylor once about it... he has the same viewpoint, but appreciated my perspective about "when your country called, you answered and set an example for future generations to follow as previous generations had in turn for you... there's plenty of heroism in that, especially in a society that now seems to celebrate shirking of duties over rising to them."

I never really liked the terminology "Old Farts" but this makes me feel better about it. And if you aren't one, I'll bet you know one! I got this from an "Old Fart" friend of mine!
OLD FART PRIDE I'm passing this on as I did not want to be the only 'old fart' receiving it. Actually, it's not a bad thing to be called, as you will see.
Old Farts are easy to spot at sporting events; during the playing of the National Anthem, Old Farts remove their caps and stand at attention and sing without embarrassment. They know the words and believe in them. Old Farts remember World War II, Pearl Harbor Guadalcanal , Normandy and Hitler. They remember the Atomic Age, the Korean War, The Cold War, the Jet Age and the Moon Landing. They remember the 50 plus Peacekeeping Missions from 1945 to 2005, not to mention Vietnam . If you bump into an Old Fart on the sidewalk he will apologize. If you pass an Old Fart on the street, he will nod or tip his cap to a lady. Old Farts trust strangers and are polite, particularly to women. Old Farts hold the door for the next person and always, when walking, make certain the lady is on the inside for protection. Old Farts get embarrassed if someone curses in front of women and children and they don't like any filth or dirty language on TV or in movies. Old Farts have moral courage and personal integrity. They seldom brag unless it's about their children or grandchildren. It's the Old Farts who know our great country is protected, not by politicians, but by the young men and women in the Air Force, Army, Navy and RCMP, serving their country.
This country needs Old Farts with their work ethic, sense of responsibility, pride in their country and decent values.
We need them now more than ever.
Thank Goodness for Old Farts!
Pass this on to all the "Old Farts" you know.
I was taught to respect my elders. It's just getting harder to find them.

The generation that this man commanded taught us a great deal.... But apparently we failed to pass it on, and as each decade passed, it faded even further from memory. My oldest son knows nothing about this, not from not being taught by me, but from being "untaught" by the Hippy generation. His attitude (62 years old) is "if it doesn't affect me, then I could care less"... Even our generation is fast disappearing.....

Veterans
Quote from a WWII veteran overhearing someone say that `You can't bomb an ideology.":
"The hell you can't. Because we did it. These Muslims are no different than the [Imperial] Japanese. The Japs had their suicide bombers too. And we stopped them. What it takes is the resolve and will to use a level of brutality and violence that your generations can't stomach. And until you can, this crap won't stop. It took us on the beaches with bullets, clearing out caves with flame throwers, and men like LeMay burning down their cities killing people by the tens of thousands. And then it took 2 atom bombs on top of it. But if that was what it took to win we were willing to do it. Until you are willing to do the same...well I hope you enjoy this crap, because it ain't going to stop."
