Cougar has a good question from the other threa. Flight Mode switch, what was the purpose of placing switch in the ASSIST position

Having left the F106's in 74, this is my recollection. The assist position on the flight mode controller gave both heading & attitude hold. If the pilot wanted to change heading, he depressed the manual mode switch, banked to new heading & released the MMS. Aircraft would then maintain the new heading. One of the most common AFCS gripes was "stick chatter" in pilot assist. Probably 90% of these were fixed by reseating the 326 unit!! Many time wished that the AFCS system had it's own power supplies!!! NUF SED
