I have seen two different paint schemes on the noses of 101st FIS jets. One is the scheme we usually see on F-106s - the black antiglare area in front of the cockpit sweeps down in a curve so that its edge only reaches the nose on the underside. But there was an earlier scheme where the edge of the black antiglare area meets the black nose at a right angle. When exactly did that change happen?

All Sixes had the droopy paint job when I worked on 'em, but I noticed some of the NJANG's jets had the right-angle paint job in the 1980s, at the same time other units had the droopy paint. Never have been able to find out how or why that happened.

After looking at many photographs of 101st FIS jets, it would seem that I got it backwards. The jets started with the curved demarcation line, and the F-106 ended its service in that squadron with the angular pattern. Few of the photos here are dated, but 57-2470 still had the curved edge in 1980, and 59-0061 had the curved edge when it became the B-1B chase aircraft in 1987. I'm guessing that the nose wasn't repainted for that, but I could be wrong.

The Sixes that went to the B-1 Chase program with AFSC weren't going through the same depot program, so there was no need to re-paint them. Mark O
