Hey all, dumb question here. When you all wore the hats with your squadron number on them, how were the numbers applied to the hats, and what were they made of. The numbers that is. Felt? I was looking at some old pics and started wondering. I think they looked pretty cool. BTW, did each squadron use their own colors or were they pretty much standardized across the USAF?
Thanks!
Mark
Oh, just thought of something else. Do any of you still have one of those hats?

Wish I did still have it but sadly no I don't

Not a dumb question at all. I can't brush any of the cobwebs away on this one. Still have the hat of my last unit of assignment (57th FIS), but can't remember the others. The 57th hat had the squadron emblem stenciled? on the front.

The 27th, when at Griffiss wore black hats with 27thFIS embroidered in yellow............When at Loring we wore black hats with the silhouet of the six in silver on a red border with a yellow band around it...........Don't know why red backgound......... This was an embroidered patch sewed to the hat................ Pilots also wore yellow and black checkerboard scarves. Having left the 27th 56 years ago this month, I don't have one......... But I do have the baseball cap style fatique (NOT!!!!! BDU!!!!!!) cap that I retired with 32 byears ago this monthy, as well as the USMC style hat that was issue when we were issed one piece fatiques... The top has blown out from being folded up so many times and the popped open to put on my head............Blew out as I was coming out of the BX at griffis and saluted one of our pilots who busted out laughing and gave me his squadron hat to wear til I could get to the clothing sales store (not the BX) and get a replacement...........At this time we still had clothing showdown inspections........... Whether you lived in the barracks, on or off base............. And you had better have the issued OD underwear..........Mine had been rolled up footlocker style since leaving Sampson AFB in Sept 52.........The Old Sarge

I had to dig abit deep to find this photo. Taken of my to Sons out fishing.
Son Robert on the left has on a 62 FMS (62 Field Maintenance Sq.) hat that was issued in 1983 when I came back from Sembach AB, West Germany.
Son Gary on the right has on the coolest hat of all. It was a special hat issued to me whin I was in the 318th FIS. 1976-78 It had the 318th Green Dragon and missile on the front with the 318 on one side and FIS on other side.

When Jack Broughton took over the 5th we got special Winter hats. They were black artificial wool and looked like the hats the Afghan's wear. Yep, I still have mine. We were supposed to wear our little rank pin on the left side.

That does sound like a very nice thing.
I was at the Banger Naval Subase few days ago and have been seeing the sailors in their new Navy camo uniforms. (Black, gray, & blue) and very strange looking. I asked one of the guys why the Navy feels they need a camo uniform on a underwater sub, or any boat? They all laughed and said, " beats the $hit out of us."

I agree with you Jim. what the USAF needs is a few old senior NCOs like you,me and some of the others on this forum at the top to jerk a knot in a few asses. That would put the fear o god in them. Jay.

Some bases have even contracted out the gate security. At McChord they have private security service, not any military security police.

My concern with gate security (with or without hats) is if a firefight starts wth terrorists how well will these rent-a-cops do? How safe are you at the gate and on base?

Jay. Be careful what you ask for, you may get it! Shortly after the holidays Israel will have a lot to say about Iran and its nuclear program. Depending on the response from Iran, if there is anything left, a lot of retired military personnel could find themselves in uniform again. Not that I mind going active again, it's just the response from Iran will effect us here in the States. 911 will seem mild compared to what could happen. :e8new :fire_missle_ani

Good question. If Fort Hood is any indication. Well? ?? On our recent trip to Nevada we stopped at DM on the way West. We both had to show our ID cards entering the base. There were no Sky Cops any where around, just Rent-a-Cops. We went to Nellis three times when we were in Nevada. Only had to show my ID card. No Sky Cops to be seen. Did see two in the Food Court at the BX having lunch. That's all. On the way home, another stop at DM. Only had to show my ID. On both bases, I saw very little Sky Cop presence. Except for the ones eating lunch. Maybe they were all out on the flight line. When Clinton outlawed guns on base, except for mission requirements, it lessened security. Fort Hood is the result. Can we expect more. You betcha. With PC rampant in the non-thinking of the Puzzle Palace, I wonder how safe we are from the Rent-a-Cops? How many of them will fire on our troops when the base is infiltrated? Full background checks are not PC, so who knows what will occur. Jim Too :god_bless_usa

Lets not highjack Mark's "Squadron Hats?" thread. I sorta got is started off track so I'll get us headed back there. The picture is of the first squadron hat I was ever issued. Year: 1972 Place: Norton AFB, CA Squadron: 63 FMS Picture taken in a two man barracks room. Sure wish I was that slim now.

You all are correct, all of us NCOs bear some responsibility.
In any event, I hijacked my own thread. Now I'm sorry I brought it up. Apologies all around, and good night.
