Mark,
I, like a number of early MA-1 Weenies suffered from premature cataract surgery. Two years after I separated, at age 44 I had first surgery, 2 years later the other eye. When my Doc first told me his first words were "you are too young to have cataracts". So I said "What do I have" answer..cataracts.
When I joined, the danger zones around the Six were intake and exhaust areas. The Six, MA-1 System put out a pencil beam of energy. It was enough to light up a light cart at 50 yards as beam past over light. At Christmas in Mock up we always put 28 volt glow tubes (Tiny lights used throughout cockpit) in shape of tree on window 10-15 feet from antenna. As beam went over area the light would light up.
A common write up in early MA-1 life was IR failed to track target. The way we tested system Prior to getting the "Yellow Barrel" was to have someone smoke a cig about 50-100 feet away. As they walked from side to side the IR would follow heat from cig. Well we always joked that that test would always warm us up. Why? Because when IR locked on, so did the Radar Antenna in pencil beam mode. It not only could light a 28 volt bulb or Lamp Cart it was radiating our bodies. In mid to late 60's Medical folks had us start wearing the Radiation badge Hospital X-Ray folks wore. Well it turns out that MA-1 folks would "fill up" the device in a single shift if working flight line. The test was extended to crew chiefs etc.
After I was transferred to Tyndall after 539th disbanded the TO came out with a new Danger Area and new Procedures for operating Radar. Basically we needed a free zone in front of Aircraft before transmitting Radar. After I retired I worked Logistics as Contractor and went to several Meetings were I ran into other old MA-1 guys. Many of them also suffered from early cataracts. I tried to get VA Disability for loss of eyesight and provided sever Medical Reports linking radiated emissions to eye issues as well as other cancers. But VA denied any connection. So yes, Pilots are probably getting extra radiated electrons as well as flying high in atmosphere to cause their cancers. Lorin PS, Ever heard old quote that I wear a size 10 shoe, but an 11 feels so good I buy 12's?

Here's some more info on inflight radiation. www.faa.gov/data_research/research/med_humanfacs/aeromedical/radiobiology/reports/ excerpt: Reports on Radiation Exposure During Air Travel
The Radiobiology Research Team performs research on the effects of ionizing and nonionizing radiation on living systems, identifies radiation hazards in the aviation environment, and studies methods of protection from such hazards. We were all exposed to more radiation and chemicals in support of weapons systems than the general civilian population. Unmanned vehicles may reduce some of that for flight an maintenance crews. With more RF and EMF and toxic chemicals in today's technology, all of us are getting higher doses beyond what we already experienced in the military. Now we have GMOs in the food chain. Thanks to new medicines and surgical procedures we are living longer but experiencing some of these diseases later in life. Remember Agent Orange? I heard yesterday that Bayer Corp is setting aside an $8B fund to pay off claims against Round Up weed killer. Pat P.

Pat,
I read an article recently about GMO and it's effects on population. Although many tree huggers claim GMO is dangerous and we do not have enough data to permit it's use for human consumption.
GMO is multifaceted products. Some allow crops to grow in very arid conditions, many prevent disease from harming crops. But the most is to allow for increased crop yield.
The article I read ended with asking which would you rather do, die from some effect from using GMO, or die from starvation by not using GMO.

Pat, I read an article recently about GMO and it's effects on population. A logical question that I doubt GMO HATERS won't, or can't, through their ignorance, answer. When the second generation of a farm product (corn for instance) produces seed and this seed is planted, is this crop GMO? Take the strain called "peaches and cream", some call it a "hybrid", but there isn't too much difference in the process that was used to develop it. Some sweet corn varieties were developed about 100 years ago. Are they still GMO, or are they a stand alone offspring, the result of being planted from seeds that hadn't been punctured and injected with something? Also be cautious about becoming an "Organic" only nut. The fertilizer being used could be anything non chemical.. Yep, cow droppings from the dairy farm would definitely qualify as "Organic". Insecticides? Have they been proven to have penetrated the skin of your vegetables? If the skin is penetrable (on root type vegetables), wouldn't they taste like the dirt they were grown in? Don't forget to eat only "Range Free" Eggs from "Range Free" chickens. As they roost in long open air sheds. Miles of them along I-10 in Texas. The average "egg farm" hen lives about 3 years (egg production falls off) before being turned into chicken tenders. GMO- Carbon Dating- Organic Grown- same bullschmitt with a slightly different smell. Millennials
