Does anyone remember when the USAF and/or General James was pushing a version of the F-14 as an F-106 replacement? I believe this was in 1972. Grumman even did a mock-up! Note the conformal fuel tanks, and the ADC insignia on the tail. I don't recall ever seeing this photo before, but found it looking for pics of the F-15 prototype. (You may have to click on the pic to see the full image.) Found this link with some info as well. theaviationgeekclub.com/the-adcom-f-14-the-tomcat-that-usaf-never-bought/

We had our own Red Flag Teams of different styles of Fighters including some MIGS.

Oh, that is definitely a mock-up. I got a kick out of the tail number they made up for it too! "72014"!! If one reads into that as being 72-0014, that was assigned originally as an F-111D, but the contract was cancelled! (57-2014 was a Ryan MQM-34A Firebee drone, and 67-2014 was a Martin AGM-12C Bullpup missile!)
BTW, "FG" was the buzz-number code for the F-104, but it's strange they actually put it on the mock-up since the TO dropped the requirement in 1965. Oh well, Grumman built planes for the Navy. What did they know?!
I know! I'm a geek!

I've seen pictures of that before. I didn't know that General James actually had recommended it be purchased, however.
