Was having issues with the wife's computer not upgradeable to Win 10 because of Vista. So I gave her my computer that upgraded fine to win 10. I purchased myself a new computer. A HP
I was having issues with it within a few weeks. 1. mouse wondered at times no input 2.Stops half way threw news feed and videos 3.Message popup saying credit card numbers could be stolen call this number for help 4.Page can't be displayed - happened very often 5.Explorer stopped working - often 6.Google search block does not keep up with my slow typing 7.Much too long to load many sites 8.Page not available messages 9.PC had error collecting data message 10.No response long running script 11.Explorer stopped working messages
These are the issues when I returned it to BestBuy after about 2 months.
BestBuy shipped it back to HP Factory. We talked and my options was a virus check that I'd have to pay for or they would ship it to factory for warrenty check. I chose warrenty check.
HP Factory replaced the motherboard and the videocard.
I'm still not pleased with it.
My server and I did a speed test and the Download speed is 1.35 and the upload is .50 with a 28 ping. Service provider said any down load of 1.00 to 1.50 is good.
There are times I connect to F-106 site in 5 seconds and other times will not connect at all just works at it. Sometimes It get the F-106 homepage but the forum won't open for me. Have this same crap with e-mail and others also.
Guess I'll be calling BestBuy tomorrow.

Gary, sounds like most of the problems are with very slow line speed which is not unusual in rural areas. On my cable system, I get about 85.0 mbps on both upload an download speeds. Are you connected through land line or do you use a satellite service like Hughes Net?
In our rural east TN community north of Knoxville, a lot of folks use Hughes Net service which is pretty fast most of the time.

First question I would have is how does your wife's computer act in same scenario? The computer speed is important, but on-line speeds are dependent upon provider. If your wife's computer does much better then taking it back to Best Buy is good idea. But if her's doesn't do a lot better it's not the fault of computer. All of the things you describe except for pop-up seem to be internet connection related. I have Time Warner Cable and see between 35-50 meg per sec downloads and 1 meg uploads. (I do not have the ultrahigh speed service. Even with these speeds, I sometimes get the same faults. Especially page not found (On-line server DNS issues). This is usually the provider is overloaded with requests. During school year I get this starting around 4 PM...school lets out and every kid in town wants on-line. Hope you can find problem. I know how frustrating it can be to wait, in this age of high speed internet. Lorin

Lorin was probably right on with the traffic problem. When the kiddies get home they start up the video games and Netflix downloads and my Internet speed drops off about 50-60%.

My new computer will act up and my wife's computer is right behind me so I turn it on and it operates with no problems. Both operate off same modem and hard wired. Talked to BestBuy again and they suggested I bring it back for a return. It happens tomorrow.

Took my HP Desktop back to the store today and had a pretty good argument. It was past the return policy date, but I explained it had problems from almost day one. It had eleven issues/defects and I explained that I had called in several times and was asked to do this or try that, so I did them. The problem was intermittent which a challenge was. After trying their suggestions I switched internet cords from computer to modem and that did not fix it. I the swapped ports on the modem and that had no effect either. Hooked up my old laptop and that worked fine for days. Hooked the desktop back up and problem started. I called the store and the said bring it back. So I did. Then I was told it was past the return date and they could not take it back. I said, “Well you better just get the manager!” Manager showed up and I explained it all to her. Add that if they would have said bring it back right away then it would be within the refund time instead of advising me to try this and that. Then they finely had me bring it back and they sent it to the factory for warranty which took 3 weeks and the factory changed the motherboard and graphics card. The manager said, they would exchange it since the factory did not give me a new unit. I replied, “Don’t want another one with problems.” She said then, “The best we can do is give you a in store credit to get anything I wanted. I quickly replied, “Only thing I want is a refund.” She then advised me that is all the policy would allow. I was quite agitated and told her, “I’ll right the CEo and explain all this over the internet on every review page I can find, so write down your name or give me your business card for when I contact the CEO.” She wrote her name down and walk away. About 15 minutes later the clerk was able to get back to me and said, “I’ll have your in store credit printed out shortly.” In a few minutes he add, “Looks like it was changed in the computer to give you a complete refund.” Got my refund and looked around and departed. Using my old laptop now, but it has only one working port which is not to handy. Have plans to invest in a nice new laptop soon with a SSD. Navy Exchange has some do in before long.

Have 1 HP desktop and 2 laptops. All have worked we'll. Minor problems come up and their help desk is good at fixing them either through my hands or remote hookup. The help desk folks in Vancouver were the best. Friendly and spoke good English. Only problems I ever had were parts suppliers like CD players/burners, power supplies and battery charge transformers.
All manufacturers are capable of producing a lemon once in awhile. Best bet is for them to replace the unit with a new one and repair the old one for discount sale. If they get it back, it's time to crush it and move on.
FYI, the free upgrade to Win 10 ends on July 31. After that, it costs you $120 to upgrade. Or if your PC is getting old 3-4 years, just replace it with a Win 10 model. If you bought a Win 7 or 8 unit, back up your files and upgrade to Win 10. It works better than Win 7 (which will be non-supported soon), Win 8 and Win 8.2. Win 10 is auto-update, so you won't see block upgrades like 10.2, 10.3 etc.
I also use MS Office 365. You get all the Office application programs (auto-update) for 100 bucks a year and you can install it on 5 units at no extra cost.
The thing I miss about old technology PCs is that you had to learn how the damn thing worked in order to maintain it. Like a 57 Chevy. Today, you can no longer maintain PCs or cars unless you have a AA degree in electronics and mechanics.
That's why I love drag racing. Engines still work on the suck, squeeze, bang, blow principle but there's also a lot of computer power that is monitoring every millisecond of the engine run time, so you still have to learn new stuff in order to tune the engine. Can you believe EGT sensors and getting all 8 cylinders running within 10 degrees of each other? Then, when the engine is in top profile, you have sensors that help you get the power to the track to make the best elapsed times.
Now the 5G (fifth generation) cell phones will be coming out in about 2 years. 10-100 times faster than 4G. What the heck am I going to do with a faster cell phone?
My buddy's grandson just graduated from BMT at Lackland. Man, have things changed since we went through. But that's another story for another time.

Some how a folder titled "Fishing & Boating" went empty on me and I can't find the pictures or figure out what happened. They were on my external hard drive. Any ideas how this happened and how I might be able to track them down?m

First thing I would do is a search for pics on the drive. Second would be look at properties of that folder. Make sure "show all files" is selected. Sometimes files are "hidden". How files disappear? Mostly by being deleted or "moved" by mistake. I have selected move when I meant copy before. Another thing would be to do a disc check of drive. In rare instances sometimes it will find files that can be restored.m

Found some of the pictures. It seems that when I sent stuff from the old computer onto the external drive the photos were all from Windows #8 and when we now have win #10 they were filed by file name and not in the folders. Strange how that happened. Quite a few pictures are still missing. I do not care for win #10. I still think the government and Microsoft are in bed together with this free operating system.

Well my laptop went bad. Be sharing Belinda's foe awhile so you will see me less in here. Geeksquad said looks like win 10 got corrupted. Computer boots up to desktop but then nothing else will open. Plan to replace it with a new one with a SSD.

Plan to replace it with a new one with a SSD. There is a new and explosive hack out there that holds your computer hostage called "notepad" and it comes in an email. Don't open anything with notepad in the subject- unplug the computer as soon as it pops up, even if it is from a trusted source. It wipes out the hard drive and corrupts everything else. This all I know about it. Also was told not to plug in any external hard drives of any kind, as it will corrupt them as well.

Plan to replace it with a new one with a SSD. What brand of new laptop are you getting? SSD will eliminate one problem with reliability (spinning disk).
Is your USB remote drive a spinning disk or a SSD? My daughter (pro photog) uses a SSD and stores all her pics on that, none on MAC laptop. She edits final pics for clients on SSD and never worries that the laptop may fail. She can always take the SSD to her MAC desktop and work if the laptop fails.
Lorin had a good idea. You can search the remote drive for all picture files and find them. In the search field type *.jpg if all your pics are .jpg files. Each search item found will allow you to find out where it is stored so you can go rescue them. If they are in a hidden file folder, they will show up in lighter font than the pics stored in regular file folders. If you find a lot of pics in hidden file folders, you can change folder properties to "Show Hidden Files" and go get them and move them to regular file folders.
Lorin also mentioned copy vs move functions. Copying files always takes longer and a lot of CPU power (heat) than moving them. I keep a lot of pictures and video stored on USB SanDisk thumb drives rather than on my PC hard drive. Makes the PC run faster when you don't keep a lot of stuff stored on it. I also buy my PCs at Costco when I can. They give you two extra years of free warranty when you buy from them.

I got down and read the fine print on the wife's computer and it mentioned something about a hardware failure. So I unplugged from that port and plugged into a different USB port and that fixed the problem. I guess this old desktop is starting to catchup with its age.
As for my laptop. Going to stop at BestBuy GeekSquad tomorrow. The put windows 10 on it a few months ago and now they say it corrupted. Will see if they will whip it clean and reinstall Win #10 (free)
Lots of crap and bad news today and not in the mood to type much. Later.
