Okay guys -- (Pat P.!)
Does anyone know the history of the name "Luther" with respect to the 456th FIS patch? Sort of a topic right now over on the Convair F-106 Delta Dart site on Facebook.
I know it's been asked before, but here we go again!
Many thanks!!

I know it's been asked before, but here we go again! Many thanks!! Mark O Mark, "Luther" was born in Dec 1944, by order of Hap Arnold - see the link and documents. www.456fis.org/HISTORY_OF_THE_SQUADRON.htm
Bob Justus, Bruce Gookin and I looked for years to find the origin of the 456th Octopus emblem and finally Bob got an answer from the USAF Heraldry Research Archives. We never did find out the origin of the name Luther. It could have been one of the guys back in 1944 who drew the original design and got it approved by the CO. Or it could have been named after WWII when the squadron was reactivated in the US.
The 456th FIS had Luther on the F-86 tails. Bob Justus had this photo on his 456th website but there was no caption or name credit.
We may never know who named the Octopus "Luther", or when. Until we find out, I guess we'll just have to create some mythology.
Hmmm, I wonder if any of the 456th COs had an aquarium with a small Octopus in it?
Thanks, Pat P.
