Nearly 400 of killed at the sinking of the USS Oklahoma at Pearl Harbor, who are buried in the Punchbowl Cemetery on Oahu, will be exhumed.
This is being done to confirm the identity of those named and hoping to determine the names of those unknown.
Good move by DoD on this one.
It will finally give all those families closure.

Pastor, I don't often disagree with you, but on this I do..... It was 74 years ago this 7 Dec..... How many of those young men, known and unknown have any "immediate family" still alive? How many of them have relatives that knew them are still alive? Is it really necessary to have all the noise and the possible driving over the graves of those not involved in the search. Even a Military Cemetery has a right to the solemnity one has come to expect for the last resting place before God calls them from the grave.... This is nothing more than a make work deal for the DOD division of graves and registration, or whatever they call it. There are still 2 more wars of a more recent era.... Why not open the original Tomb of the Unknown Soldier from WW1 for his descendants, but then he might not remain unknown and the monument would have to be removed....... At the risk of offending, not having closure is an over used and abused description of not letting GOD handle your grief..... Perhaps KNOWN BUT TO GOD is best left that way after 74 years.....

Jim, I can't disagree with you comments, as they are correct.
Seeing there are still some immediate family members still alive, as well as next generation, who have apparently sought this action, I think DoD would have a shallow argument to say no to them.
But, on-the-other-hand, yes, it could open up a whole giant can of worms.
As you may recall, one grave of The Unknown, was opened at Arlington, because of information the Army "found", and the body identified and no other "Unknown" was placed in the grave.
As you alluded, where will the digging stop?
I guess they could start digging up graves at Gettysburg and Shilo, as well as all the graves in France.
So, I will accept your argument as valid and say it may not be as good an idea as I first thought.
It may be a PC thing, after all, or, as you said, a Make Work project.
I wonder if some of the other families will say they don't want it done.
I have seen nothing from the very old warriors who belong to the Pearl Harbor Survivors group.
So, let's leave it at an "I don't know", but will wait to see what happens next.
