Compadres, I regret being the bearer of sad news..... Those of you that joined the 27th in late '59- early '60 will no doubt remember a Sam Blankenship, a MA=1 technician that I had the pleasure of working with when I was in QC and later as PE Insp NCOIC.. He was also a member of the ADC mandated Flight Control Team with me...... NOLAN "SAM" BLANKENSHIP Born in 1930 in Black Oak, Arkansas to Jackson and Elsie Blankenship, Nolan (Sam) Doyle Blankenship passed away on May 4, 2014. After an early career of picking cotton, Sam joined the United States Air Force at 18 years of age, traveled the world, and retired as a radar technician after 21 years. He then spent another 18 years as an electrician with Caltrans. Sam loved gumbo & all things soul food, fishing, gardening, and travel. Sam was Garnet Thompson's boyfriend for just six weeks, then husband for 61 years. Sam said that he was married for 61 years because he found the right girl the first time. Father of four successful sons: Tom (Kathy), Doug (Ann), Daniel (DeAnne), and Matthew (Rebecca); and Papa of Mikayla, Nolan, Emma, Jackson, and Sydney. Preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, a sister, and his granddaughter, Mikayla. He is survived by his wife Garnet, his sons and their wives, four grandchildren and sister, Deloris. Services are scheduled for Friday, May 9, 2014 at 1:00 pm at Church of Christ, 995 E. Lassen Ave., Chico, CA. Reception to follow. Sam and Garnet attended many of our 456th FIS Reunions. They are great folks and Sam will be missed. From humble beginnings, Sam grew into a man who enriched the lives of everyone he met. May he rest in peace. Prayers for Garnet and the family.
