Just did a MAJOR update to the newly-created "Decal Sets" gallery over on the main pages. It's located under "Models. RCs, and Decals", and can be found under the "Community" drop-down menu by clicking on "RCs & Modeler's." Here is a direct link... www.f-106deltadart.com/photo_gallery/index.php/RC-and-Models/DECAL-SETS?page=1Two pages so far. Hopefully we'll see more decals when Trumpeter releases their new F-106A, and F-106B kits. Enjoy! Mark O.

Tried to file only one, got a doubletap instead... Everybody -- If you have a decal not posted (or a scan better than one of mine!), please email it to me at KF5SPP@arrl.net, or to MOW at mcgeepj@hotmail.com. Although I think I'm pretty knowledgeable about MOST of the F-106 decals that have been released I make NO claim in being THE expert on all F-106 decals, and thank you for any information you all have! Information such as the maker, date released, availability, etc. is greatly appreciated. Please feel free to use the "Add a comment" button, and add your insight! Thanks!!

Sorry, Mark, meant only one comment. I know of one publisher who did 59-004 in 318th command-stripes, but they folded before I was even out of elementary school--I'll recheck the Detail & Scale volume that touted that set and see what I can dig up.

Way ahead of you Jim. I posted this close-up on FB when I made this set my "Decal of the Day." Damn! I never knew YOU were the artist!! Nice!! Thanks, Mark.... At the time I painted that on 900, cameras were forbidden on the flightline at Loring, so I never got a picture othat .. That was the only nose art on any of the 27th birds when I left in Dec 1963...... Jim

Mark, I mean I meant to post one comment, but somehow it doubletapped and posted my comment twice. Yes, Fowler is the set I was thinking of... funny thing, one of my old math profs had a question on the Finescale Modeler magazine forum about 'em and he never got an answer from anybody either.

Col Stewart said that was his version of the Commander's stripe, and to the best of my memory, there were no other birds that had any stripes on them.... At least not the ten birds that I painted

Jim, Please describe how you laid out, masked and painted the checkerboard design and overlaid the yellow triangle with black border. Did you create to overall yellow field first, then come back and mask and paint the black areas over the yellow? Complex design but very nice look! Thanks, Pat P.

Thanks,http://forum.f-106deltadart.com/search Pat P. View AttachmentThe complexity was nothing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It was prepping that gray paint to allow the nitrocellulose lacquer to take a good bite so when you pulled the masking tape off, the lacquer stayed on the airplane!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The yellow was sprayed on first because black covered yellow better than the yellow covered the black. The squares were cut from stencil board to make masking off easier and able to be reused ( they lasted for about 5 airplanes). Chalk line and a story stick were used to lay out the horizontal lines for everything...... I took a wall in the sheet metal shop and projected a measured drawing on the wall full size and laid it out on the wall. Because of the red ring around the outside of the yellow and white "almost" ying yang behind the falcon (eagle) was a real son of a witch to get done... Didn't matter whether you sprayed white over red or red over white- you got pink!!!!!!!! Even spraying clear lacquer over the white before spraying the red didn't help..... So, it took 2 stencils to get pure red and white and you hoped your tape was down tight so you wouldn't get bleed under that turned pink........The falcon (eagle) was done with 3 hand cut stencils. The scrolled banner around the bottom was done with 2 stencils and the webs holding the stencil together were hand retouched..... Initial layout had to go from leading to trailing edges make sure the squares that reappeared were in proper sequence. You will note the there are partial squares on the leading edge- these line up with the ones on the other side!!!!!!!!!!!! Same on the rudder.... About 60 rolls of masking tape, 10 sheets of stencil board and perhaps a roll 3 foot wide brown paper and I can no longer remember how much lacquer and thinner was used to do 10 airplanes- but it was a lot!!!!!!!!!!

Man, that was big task. I would have been tired too after doing 10 of them. Just think how much time we would have save if we had those computer designed wraps like they put on cars and trucks these days. Great looking design!
The early 60's 456th tail had the yellow and black dart feather tail flash and the red, white & blue band at the base of the rudder (which was a 28th Air Division requirement. When we changed air divisions in 1966 Col Jackson and I dropped the tail flash down lower to help fill in the grey space with the missing 28th AD band. That tail was easy to paint but had to lay out horizontal lines by measure and pencil lines, then mask and spray. Sprayed the yellow first then shot the dark blue lines. Fortunately the Luther Octopus was a 36 inch circular decal with a white field and black border. ADC Eagle on the right side was also the same type decal. The decals were made by a shop in Fresno and I think they were $75 each. They were pretty hard to install unless the temperature was warm enough to prevent bubbles. Had to feather the lead edge of all decals with clear lacquer to keep them from peeling off at Mach 2+. Some of the gung ho crew chiefs waxed their aircraft when they came back from depot with fresh paint. The ones who didn't had chalky paint after 12-18 months in the hot CA sun. We didn't have that good clear lacquer you can get today. The good ole days.
