I was the victim of a hit & run this morning. That old saying, "crap happens." I'd gotten out of my truck and some how I must have bumped the gearshift out of park and into reverse, or the transmission jumped into reverse. It all happened so darn fast. All I remember is the door hitting me in the back. I think I spun around and grabbed the steering wheel with my right hand and the door handle as later I found a door panel on the ground. My first thought was, I forgot the emergany break but the truck & door was pushing me backwards and off balance. As I fell, I figured this is it, the truck is going to run over me and maybe kill me. My mind quickly said pull on the steering wheel as you fall and that will turn the front wheels away from you. It did and the truck missed me. But the bottom of the door injured both knees. Next I knew I was on the ground in pain. Looking back over my shoulder I watched the truck leave the front area of the garage and then down across the yard into an apple tree knocking it over. On its trip it also hit a riding lawn tractor denting it. All in all it could have been much worst. The Lord was watching over me. Now its all up to Allstate to fix the trucks tailgate and pay my medical bills. Doctor took x-rays and nothing is broken. Have some good pain meds and just waiting for them to kick in. Attachments:

Gary, have that transmission checked- I don't think that you are suppose to be able to move the shift lever out of park without having the foot brake applied. At least on my Windstar you can't.... Thanks for the call last night.................. Jim

Glad to hear you didn't get run over by your wayward pickup, Gary.
Are you sure it isn't a Terrorist Act, or maybe you are living with a truck from a Stephen King novel, or the Twilight Zone.

Holy crap Gary that's terrible. Glad you're somewhat ok, like you say it could have been worse. I must admit though that trying to run myself over with my own vehicle isn't something I've tried myself haha

Glad you're okay Gary. Well, relatively. Crap definitely happens.
In a way it reminded me of me leaving my buddy's car in neutral, and not setting the brake while it was parked on just the slightest of incline. A fence on Kadena AB was damaged, as well as his bumper.
We never reported, much less paid for either to get fixed. My buddy forgave me too!
I suppose the statute of limitations has expired for my "un-occupied" hit-and-run by now! (It was in 1985.)

flag-waverHEHE!!! That story reminds me of an incident involving two MA-1 NCO's who left their flight line truck running and parked outside of a hangar. That truck ended up in a 20 foot square of fresh concrete! I wonder if the two trucks are related?? HEHE!!! MArv

Allstate just woke us up. They wanted to know how I was doing and wanted to make sure I had the two claim numbers to pay my medical bills and fix the truck. The tailgate and emergency break parts are now on order. Hope to have everything fixed on the truck within a week. That cut across my left knee cap is surely going to take awhile to heal. When I walk the skin pulls and doing stairs makes it hurt bad. Glad I have vicodin pain pills.

Its starting to look better and feel better. My wife is a RN and says to let it get some fresh air to help it heal. It would have been worse had she not put ice packs on it when it happened. Attachments:

Had too be extra careful driving home from Port Hadlock this morning. I remembered last week I gave a young Navy girl a ride home after her vehicle transmission went out and she was stranded at the shop I was getting my oil & filter changed in Silverdale. The next day I had my accident and injured my knees. Looking back to December Belinda was looking for items to include in the Children's Christmas Program at Church when she had her major accident ( put her in the ER & totaled her vehicle). Now this morning I found a bank deposit zipper envelope with "Lots" of money in it. Some of the money was sticking out of the bag. I turned it into the bank and they were able to contact the owner. Now that old saying, "No good deed goes unpunished" often is true. Wonder how many days I need to be extra careful?
Ever hear that devilish little voice saying, "finders Keepers....." I never listen to it.

I never listen to it. Good on you Gary. I never listed to that voice either. Somebody probably fumbled with unlocking their car and put the deposit bag on the roof... and forgot it and drove off. We live close to a high school and often see books and back packs on the road. If you sit at Starbucks long enough you'll see someone drive off with a coffee on the roof. I've almost done it myself a time or two. Pat P. PS: Get well soon. Old Sarge may be onto something with that brake pedal safety release for the gear shift.

That's great, Gary.
You listened to the correct Voice, the One that told you to turn the money in.
Not only do you have a clear conscience, but you saved that someone a lot more grief than they already had.
There is no substitute for honesty.
I imagine it even made those aching knees feel better, and maybe gave Belinda something she can use in this year's Christmas Program.
If you remember the movie; "It's A Wonderful Life", Uncle Billy misplaced the deposit envelope from the Bailey Savings and Loan, which caused George Bailey, and his family a lot of grief, for a time.
How about that for a Christmas Program Story, adapted to what you found and did.

Jim, that is exactly what my wife commented. She watches that movie every Christmas Season.

Here are some pictures from my Freedom flight to Washington DC. The WWII Monument was barricaded off but we had them moved. They called us the barricade busters from Story County. The fountain was shut off but still was a great monument to see. The kibows (sp) were even locked up. That's me with Rep. Steve King who helped unlock the monument. More picts. to come later...
