It is with sadness that I have learned, and now report to you, that Lt. Col. Francis "Peck" Burkhardt, of San Antonio, Texas, passed away Friday, March 25, 2011, at the age of 89. A native of Braddock Hills Borough, Peck trained as a pilot in the Army Air Corps and served his country as an Air Force pilot flying missions in a B-24 during World War II. Following World War II, he attended the University of Pittsburgh, married Beverly Gulick, of Williamsport, Pennsylvania, and was recalled to military service for the Korean War. During this period, he became an aircraft maintenance staff officer and served in this capacity for the remainder of his career including Vietnam. He flew combat sorties in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. He served four years in Norway with the MAAG, retired from the military in 1970, after serving as F-106 Chief of Maintenance in the 27th Fighter Interceptor Squadron, Loring AFB, Maine, under Colonel William Moore and Colonel James Thomas. To add to his talents, he became a licensed homebuilder in Colorado. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Beverly; daughter, Patricia Leahy, and son-in-law, Mike Leahy, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; grandsons, Michael and Matthew; five great-grandchildren; sisters, Marylane Conner and Irmina Thompson; brothers, Eugene and Raymond Burkhardt; and numerous nieces and nephews.
